Love psychology but hate math? Christine has written the perfect book for you. Math has long been the domain of the patriarchy. All those scary numbers and equations. Now your brain can finally relax! I'm hoping she writes a follow up about engineering without math for public educators.

A good book for students who do not like maths

It is a good book with clear illustration of the statistics. It begin with simple statistics and then move on to more difficult analysis. Before I get this book, whenever I pick up a book about statistics, I feel fate. Then I close it immediately after reading 1 to 2 pages, and never pick it up again. However, for this particular book, I've read more than half (about 300 pages)and still want to finish it. After you've read one page, you are eager to read another and another. So, I highly recommend this book to undergradaute and postgraduate students.

Awesome book

For both chemical and physical oceanography, this book is great. It isn't overwhelmingly long and it explains concepts very clearly and concisely. The diagrams and figures are really good and the chapter questions and answers are super helpful! I highly recommend this book for anyone taking an oceanography class, or for anyone looking for a reference book to have.

On reading the sample on the Kindle, this textbook appeared to present a comprehensive basic review of seawater in a cogent and very readable manner. However, its tables and diagrams as displayed on the Kindle are so reduced in size as to be illegible. The lack of color transmission, and the failure of the font size function to effect these figure elements, makes the value of downloading this textbook questionable.

Kobe Bryant maybe one of the youngest basketball players in the NBA. He is the son of Joe"Jeallybean" Bryant, a basketball player and star of various European teams. Kobe's childhood watching professional basketball games made him pick up a basketball for the first time. He was learning how to shoot and dribble. His basketball education was a unique combination of lessons on basic fundamentals, one-on-one game against his dad, and keen observation and analysis of the world's best players. Kobe learned his lesson well, and at age 18 he was given the chance to prove it. He was drafted into the NBA when he was fresh out of high school. Kobe showed that he had the talent and the heart to make it in the pros. From one out of five, I rate this book a five because it made me want to play basketball.

The Wedding Diaries

I really thought this was a dumb book. The plot wasn't too bad and the characters were well defined. I like romance and sex as well as anyone, but
I really got tired of it and the whole absurd idea that they had every kind of sex imaginable, except for penetration. The sex scenes took over the book and became boring. This book reads like a Harlequin Romance and is about as interesting. I bought this for my Kindle and was so disappointed in it that I removed it from the Kindle and stored it. If I could remove it permanently I would.

Vivienne is about to marry Grady, but discovers that he has eyes for someone a female attorney he works with, so they part amicably. She then discovers that her daddy has run off with her inheritance, leaving her to fend for herself, and stuck with all the bills.

She suddenly finds herself without a home, car, credit cards, man, or prospects for a job. Real estate mogul Max accidentally offers her a job as a nanny for his two sisters, which she quickly accepts. Soon, Vivienne has wooed his entire family, including his surly teenage sister, Nicky.

Vivienne has never really been in love; her relationship with Grady was based on societal concerns. Plus, she has never really known if men have liked her for herself or her fortune. Max has been nursing a crush on Vivienne since he was 10 and she was 6; will he finally get the chance to explore his feelings for her?

Lee cleverly uses Vivienne's unused Wedding Diary for her personal revelations which aid the progression of the story.

In Texas, Max Landy shows a house he lists to his client Vivienne "Pampered Princess" Stansfield. Not long afterward, Vivienne learns that she is in deep debt and her father, who pays the bills, is missing and her fianc� dumped her. Max sees her in Bobby's Place, a popular bar, drowning her sorrows and offers her encouragement. However, she interprets his words as a job offer as a nanny to his younger sisters that he raises. A couple of days later an even more desperate Vivienne accepts.
Desperate for someone to care for his two siblings he gives her a chance. As they fight she begins to provide a positive influence on his two wards and his other adult siblings. She feels good that he seems to care about Vivienne and not the media darling princess. Soon Max and Vivienne fall in love, but her faith in Max is shattered when she learns he has kept a scrapbook centered on her since they met twenty years ago as children from different sides of the tracks.
THE WEDDING DIARIES is a fine contemporary romance starring two likable lead characters, a host of congenial secondary players (his siblings), and two disagreeable parents. The story line is fun as readers enjoy watching the "Pampered Princess" struggling yet persevering against all odds. Though key issues and problems resolve too easily, Linda Francis Lee provides a delightful tale that sub-genre readers will enjoy.

...then read this book. A little bit too much emphasis placed on clearing up the Page 'occult' rumors/theories, but other than that - a fun read about a great one-of-a-kind band. (I'll never understand the people that put these guys down)

CASE FILE: the facts

at first I was reluctant to buy this book - but I found it very interesting and very useful (especially since I too have been published since 1982 and am a BIG Led Zeppelin/solo members fan. The book is categorized - its not a another remake of a remade remake LZ book. There were a few little errors (like TWINKLE song listed wrong - the right title is "Terry") There are slight errors which the proofreader THE AUTHOR could have caught. Very good indeed, all thats left to know I am sure would be autobiographies by the 3 remaining band members. Another thing worth mentioning is that chapters are titled after song lyrics. clever.

If you're a Zep fan and never tire of reading about them, then get this book. Great book to just pick up whenever and flip to a page and start reading. Definitely a great buy for a Zep fan.

Thanks for the $100 moving average crossover system

I like most of the books from Connors Research, but after getting this one I was a little underwhelmed that the strategy is just a simple moving average cross-over system of the VXX. It includes backtest results and information about the nature of VXX and it's relation to the VIX, but most of that is out on the web. I coded the system in Ninjatrader and my results didn't quite match up with the book's, but they were profitable but drawdown was larger than I would have liked, especially since 2015. There are more sophisticated volatility ETN strategies out there. Check out the "VIX and More" blog and tradingvolatility.net

Volatility and trend are your friends

Connors Research offers both mean reversion and trend following strategies, but the VXX Trend Following Strategy is (obviously) the latter. The hardest part about this strategy is to understand the VXX symbol that you are trading. The VXX simply holds a portfolio of VIX (Volatility Index) futures. You will want to dig in and understand what you are buying and this book takes several pages to walk you through the VXX.

There are several strengths to this strategy. The first is that you only need to follow one trading symbol, VXX. Second, the trade entry rules are extremely straight forward and you will be able to set this up in any free trading/charting platform. Third, this strategy takes both long and short trades. To be “long” you are betting on the price to go higher and to be “short” means you are betting on price to go lower. You must understand this concept as the VXX has a downward bias and 85% of the trades will be “short”. Since the VXX is negatively correlated to the stock market, when the VXX is going lower, the stock market is going higher. So, most of the trades will be when the VXX is declining in price. The one downside is that the VXX has only been around since 2009, so there is not a decade of data to back test, but the results are compelling enough to stay engaged and not abandon the strategy.

It is typical to see trend following strategies with a Win Rate of 30% and still be profitable, but this is emotionally difficult for the trader. The VXX Trend Following Strategy has a Win Rate of 45% (depending on what moving average variation you use.) This is more than acceptable for a trend following system if you have the emotional strength to take the trades, and with an Average Gain per trade around 3%, the trader should feel more confident with each trade.

Volatility is talked about a lot but few people explain how to turn talk into action. The VXX Trend Following Strategy provides rules that define exactly when to trade SPY based on volatility. The book is one of the very few that actually tells you how to trade volatility. Precise rules and back tested results allow you to trade with confidence. This is a valuable book that could pay for itself with 2 or 3 trades.

About the Author
Julia Lovell is an author, translator, and academic. She is the author of the widely acclaimed The Great Wall: China Against the World 1000 BC–AD 2000, which was published in eighteen countries. She has translated many key Chinese works into English, including Lust, Caution by Eileen Chang, The Complete Fiction of Lu Xun, and Serve the People by Yan Lianke. She is a lecturer in modern Chinese history and literature at the University of London and writes for the Guardian, The Times, the Economist, and the Times Literary Supplement. She spends a large part of the year in China with her family.

Excellent Overview with Hithertofor Overlooked Chinese Perspective

As a China specialist, I am reasonably familiar with the Opium War and have read several books covering it. Lovell's book is by far the most comprehensive I have encountered, in that it includes much material from Chinese archives. All the other accounts I have seen are written strictly from the Western perspective; Lovell makes a considerable contribution in offering insights on how the Chinese viewed (and view) the conflict.
Lovell hits all the major points surrounding the embroglio -- Lord Napier's mission, the gunner of the Lady Hughes, Britain's trade imbalance with China, the hong and the hoppo, China's bimetallic currency standard, the Canton factories, and much more. Importantly, the author brings the War into the present, demonstrating convincingly how its impact shaped and shapes the contemporary Chinese views of the West (and Japan). She further elucidates how the Communist Party utilizes this narrative to support its own position, and strengthen nationalism in the country.

Stylistically the book is well written and engrossing. I suspect readers less familiar with the general background may be a bit overwhelmed by the complexity of issues and campaign, and particularly by the myriad of Chinese actors involved in the story. The many Chinese names that appear in the book could become rather confusing. The author thankfully offers a short summary of the major players at the end of the book.

My only significant criticism is Lovell's lack of focus on the foreign powers demands for extraterritoriality (whereby foreigners committing crimes in China are tried not by Chinese courts, but by authorities of their own nationality). This was an extremely pernicious practice, one still widely resented in China today.

All in all, a first rate effort, and a worthy read.

Exceptionally well-written account of the Opium wars and their impact on modern China

Julia Lovell is a brilliant writer. In this meticulously footnoted account of the Opium wars, history comes alive. Her pithy descriptions and accounts of characters on both sides of the war was both informative and at times laugh-out-loud funny. As well as a description of the wars, researched from both Chinese and British sources, she includes a final chapter based on interviews from young Chinese today which provides insight into the ongoing impact on the Opium wars on modern Chinese perception of the West.

It's hard to do justice to her nuanced account of the Opium wars. Suffice to say, she finds greed, incompetence, and violence, but also civilisation, kindness and apathy, occurring on both sides of the conflict.

Overall, she finds that Chinese rulers have always been as concerned, if not more, with domestic affairs than foreign ones. She sees the British failure to understand this underpinning the conflict during the Opium wars, but still relevant today as Chinese actions are interpreted by outsiders without consideration for their domestic pressures and constraints.

Accessible and balanced

The Opium War is a very balanced and accessible account of a not-so glorious period of British history. The British went to war mainly to open up China to trade in general, and to keep the profitable opium trade in particular, which the Chinese were trying to shut down due to the horrendous effect opium had on the country's population. Interestingly, the British mostly justified the war by saying they were librating the Chinese people, who wanted to trade, but were reluctant to do so because of their repressive empire.

Lovell's account of this important historical event is based on Western and Chinese sources which help shed some light on how the Chinese viewed the Western world in those days.

Highly recommended for those, who are interested in learning more about the historical events that shaped how China views the West today.
