Carole Wood's d�but novel, Aventurine Heart is a treat for lovers of young adult fiction. Packed full with Angels, Demons, and a first love. What more could you ask for? This is a story of a young girl named Alexa who falls in love. She is then introduced to a whole new world of supernatural beings that tries her sanity and will power.

Carole Wood writes with a strong attention to detail and uses vivid imagery to pull the reader into the story. Wood paints vibrant settings and makes us care about the characters while we watch them grow.

At times, I found that there were drifting tangents that narrated unnecessary details which slowed the pacing a touch more than needed.

Even so, this is a must read book. There are many five star moments and I look forward to picking up her next tale. Wood is definitely an Author to watch for and I cannot wait until her next book comes out.

A way of thinking about medicine

Medical books fall into two main types. Firstly we have our large descriptive textbooks which give us words and pictures to describe what is happening in our patients. Books such as Davidson's, Harrison's and Kumar and Clarke exemplify this tradition. They paint a picture of the practice of medicine.

The second type of book forces us to ask sharp questions about the pictures we have about our medicine. They make us question our epistemology. They ask us "how do you know that is so?" and "How would you know if that wasn't like that?" They ask us to think not, "what do I know?" but "How do I know that I know that?" They make us think about our thinking. They feed an endless line of doubt and dissatisfaction- that ultimately questions existing descriptions of how things are- and leads onto new and innovative ways of conceiving and treating problems. This book is firmly in this second category.

Books in this second category suffer in that they are rarely compulsory texts, or fully examined. Medical students and candidates for post-graduate exams are largely questioned on the existing knowledge- as described in the large standard textbooks. They are rarely pushed much into examination of their thinking- the basic descriptions are mostly taken as enough. My profession suffers because it often relies so much on description, rather than primary thinking and analysis of concepts.

When you really get interested in medicine then the books in this second category become much more interesting and challenging. Yes you have to know the standard textbooks reasonably well, but the fun in medicine comes from the second category books- those that make us think about our thinking.

This current book is excellent. This new edition lives up to the standards of it preceding editions (the very fact an academic book has gone into so many editions is testament that many have found it useful.) The book does it exactly what it says it will do- by the end of it you will know how to read a paper. You will also know how to write a paper better too- you will know what people are looking for in a paper- and so what to provide to editors, reviewers and readers. The book is a clear guide to understanding what a paper is trying to tell you and how to know if it is doing so accurately, fairly, and within the limits of its measurements. The narrative is clear and well structured- and at the end of the book are all the key checklists you will need if you are reading a paper. At any stage of your medical career- from just starting reading papers to people who are already experienced academics and peer reviewers- this book will help sharpen your understanding of medical papers.

The book goes some way beyond its title. It moves onto questions about how to use the medical evidence base well in care of an individual patient. It deals well with criticisms of evidence based practice. It helps readers evaluate reviews and meta-analyses well. It deals well with how guidelines are constructed.

There is a huge amount in this book. It's a rich book about medicine, and more specifically how we can really claim that we know something in medicine, and how we can then use that knowledge well for patients. It goes far beyond just "reading a paper." It is well constructed, and will give doctors at all stages of their career something to think about- whether for the first time- or as revision and reminder. There's something about basic ideas that makes them worth revisiting regularly. They may be basic, but they are very dangerous if they go without being said.

I can recommend this book to all medical students and doctors- it covers basic skills that we all need to understand our medical knowledge and how it is constructed. At different stages of your career you will take different learning points from it. But at each reading you will learn or remind yourself of something worthwhile from it.

I have found it one of the most easily readable and complete guides in the subject. It is very well organized. I especially like the statistics chapter which is also basic but provides a nice groundwork and explanation of the part of research papers that students find most daunting.I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in reading and understanding published research papers but who does not have a scientific background. Thank you Dr. Greenhalgh for this book and for keeping it up to date.

Qaisra Shahraz pleasantly surprises with her debut novel. Set in a village in Sind, the readers are taken across the world to Cairo, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, as the story unravels.
The university educated heroine, Zarri Bano (ZB) - beautiful and elegant - meets her match in Sikander, a debonair Karachi-based business tycoon. Accepting his proposal, she goes as far as dreaming of setting up a press in Karachi after marriage. But fate and her patriarchal clan catch up with her and her world turns topsy-turvy: her overly possessive father after his only son's death decrees that the stylish ZB devote her life to religion and praying, forbidding marriage to her, so as to keep the family property from falling into "outsiders' " hands. How ZB copes with her new life makes for a very interesting reading. There is a parallel strain in the novel, too, which though less absorbing, provides insight into the lives of village folk.
The steadfastness and incredible will power of ZB transcends through the pages - she instils energy in the readers. Once started, the novel is difficult to put down; it awes and beguiles when least expected.

Any woman, anywhere...

Though sitting in an air-conditioned room, I could feel the heat of the desert when the then mysterious man stole his first glance of Zarri Bano. While reading further, I often caught myself having not exhaled for some time – the descriptions of everything from the food to the living spaces to the clothing to the people themselves made me shocked when I looked up and realized they were not in the room with me. The writing in The Holy Woman conveys such clear images with such a pace that reading is like being in the presence of the characters in their world.
The main female characters are strength incarnate. Each in her own way has been dealt an unexpected had either by society and its expectations or by cruel twists of fate. In her own time, each woman manages to find a place within to question how best to respond to the challenge. Some do it immediately with a dignity and grace to be emulated; others take decades to overcome their anguish. I especially loved Zarri Bano, admiring her ability to authentically manage her challenges in life, and to do so without a trace of bitterness. I was especially moved by the way she realized that with her background and support and new status as a Holy Woman, she could educate and help so many women. Far from locking herself away from the world, she was able to give more than she would have with her original life plan. She took what could have been crushing and turned it into a victory for herself and for other women. Would it not be wonderful if we could all do that in our own way?
So many painful truths are revealed in the dialogues, but reading them and knowing their applicability to any time and any place made me feel that some truths are truly universal, and suffering, love, and confusion are all a part of the human emotional landscape, and we will face them at some point – hopefully with dignity and an eye toward making lemonade out of those lemons. Spending time with the characters of The Holy Woman will make you sad to turn the last page of the book – but luckily there are at least two more novels, Typhoon and Revolt, to savor as well!

I really enjoied reading Holy Woman. I was amazed about the way a woman would go through. She is one strong woman. When she was happy I was happy!! When she was upset I felt upset as well. I felt like I was feeling what she was going trough. Cant wait to read the sequel "Typhoon"
I recommand to ppl to read it.

The wisdom that eludes modern courts

I love this story. I use it in late November-early December in my primary music classes when we sing songs from various winter celebrations. My students are wholly unfamiliar with Judaism, and I'm very careful not to proselytize, but they are intrigued by the menorah, the imagined smell of latkes, and the dreydl game. The illustrations of this book give a sense of candlelight in the darkness.

'The Damned Fraternitie': Constructing Gypsy Identity in Early Modern England, 1500–1700 examines the construction of gypsy identity in England between the early sixteenth century and the end of the seventeenth century. Drawing upon previous historiography, a wealth of printed primary sources (including government documents, pamphlets, rogue literature, and plays), and archival material (quarter sessions and assize cases, parish records and constables's accounts), the book argues that the construction of gypsy identity was part of a wider discourse concerning the increasing vagabond population, and was further informed by the religious reformations and political insecurities of the time. The developing narrative of a fraternity of dangerous vagrants resulted in the gypsy population being designated as a special category of rogues and vagabonds by both the state and popular culture. The alleged Egyptian origin of the group and the practice of fortune-telling by palmistry contributed elements of the exotic, which contributed to the concept of the mysterious alien. However, as this book reveals, a close examination of the first gypsies that are known by name shows that they were more likely Scottish and English vagrants, employing the ambiguous and mysterious reputation of the newly emerging category of gypsy. This challenges the theory that sixteenth-century gypsies were migrants from India and/or early predecessors to the later Roma population, as proposed by nineteenth-century gypsiologists. The book argues that the fluid identity of gypsies, whose origins and ethnicity were (and still are) ambiguous, allowed for the group to become a prime candidate for the 'other', thus a useful tool for reinforcing the parameters of orthodox social behaviour.

About the Author

Frances Timbers holds a PhD in British History from the University of Toronto (2008). She has published two books and three articles that deal with issues of magic, witchcraft and gender in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. Timbers is currently on a self-imposed sabbatical in Panama, where she spends her time writing about gypsies, teaching yoga, biking to the beach and caring for seven rescued cats.

There is a critical problem with the readability of portions of the book

I was delighted to see that this book was published. I have been interested in learning more about the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. I received the book from Amazon and started to look through the contents. The pictures and illustrations are well chosen and interesting to view. It also appears that the author is knowledgeable about the subject.
There is however a critical problem with the book, a problem that should have never occurred if the book was carefully checked for readability prior to being approved for a press run.
All of the illustrations and photographs have descriptions describing the photograph/illustration. Sadly, the descriptions are not only in a very small font, but the color of the font is light gold in color. The very light color of the text and the small size of the text makes the descriptions so difficult and burdensome to read that I was left with no alternative but to return the book to Amazon.

Great collection of photos. Must have for every P.P.I.E. enthusiast.

By all rights this should be a five star review. This book is a great addition to the available literature on the P.P.I.E. of 1915. Bruno has put together a wonderful collection of vintage photos and the text offers the reader important background information not presented elsewhere. The selection of photos and the quality of resolution are all one could hope for. The book is well produced and appears capable of handling years of use. The one fault, and the reason it loses that fifth star, is one that is addressed at length by another reviewer - the inability of the photo descriptions to be read without benefit of a magnifying glass. The text in question is too small and is printed in silver ink. The combination makes for very difficult reading. I think John Galt was quite severe in his two star rating because there is much here to be commended. But this issue is too significant to ignore altogether. I am glad I bought the book and am happy to add it to my library. But I hope other publishers take note of this criticism because its not the first time I've encountered this problem. Hopefully, should another edition be forthcoming, this matter will be corrected.

Please take note of another indispensable new book celebrating the 100th anniversary of the P.P.I.E. - "San Francisco's Jewel City" by Laura Ackley. It's the perfect companion to Lee Bruno's work.

A Fair to Remember

How many times have you rolled your eyes and sighed when someone starts telling you about his great grandfather? When you ask Lee Bruno about his, he is surprisingly circumspect – perhaps too much so.

Lee Bruno’s gorgeous volume Panorama: Tales from San Francisco’s 1915 Pan-Pacific International Exposition is a testament to “the City that knows how”, the Exposition, and the remarkable vision of Ruben Brooks Hale, the author’s great grandfather.

Hale was a far sighted entrepreneur, president of the Merchants’ Association, who planted the idea of hosting a grand Exposition - timed with the opening of the Panama Canal – in the minds of San Francisco’s civic leaders in 1904. Unfortunately, the earthquake and fire of 1906 naturally put plans on hold. As the city and residents struggled in the aftermath of the disaster, Hale pushed his idea – presenting it at a “reconstruction dinner” held at the Saint Francis Hotel on July 25, 1906 for the San Francisco Merchants’ Association. In a speech, “calculated to rally each and every businessman in the audience and challenge their collective entrepreneurial can-do spirit” Hale noted that, “San Franciscans have the reputation of being big men, working out big problems, in a big way.”

The City would prove Hale correct. The resulting Exposition, which opened February 20, 1915 and lasted for ten months, would be hugely successful – “the largest public gathering in the United States to date” and proof that San Francisco was not only reborn, but a center of culture and inspiration.

Bruno’s book is not designed to be a “history of the Fair” but rather a compendium of Fair experiences. In thirty-four pithy essays, Panorama shares the stories of the visionaries, builders, innovators, performers, artists, and visitors of the Exposition. The essays, coupled with the lush images of scenery, people, and ephemera enable the reader to glean a holistic understanding of the Exposition and an appreciation of how it transformed San Francisco into the amazing place it is today.
