Ex-Army Captain Sam Walton, at the end of WWII, doggedly pushed a dismal Arkansas five-and-dime and a $25,000 family loan via a commonplace business stratagem into the Wal-Mart miracle that one time catapulted him into America’s richest man with $9 billion in his pile. Sam’s bright idea was to beg wholesalers to cut their profit margin so his store could sell cheaper. They laughed in his face. But he found smart variety store execs and money and, as everyone knows, made it work. This intimate biography details fully his boyhood, college days, romance, and his early business blunders. It crackles with the human side--Sam’s love of quail hunting and rather casual flying, on to his physicians’ account of his heroic but futile fight against cancer.

Review
This well-written Horatio Alger-like tale of...Sam Walton it is refreshingly upbeat in contrast to the life stories of other contemporary entrepreneurs.
 --Publishers Weekly

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Vance Trimble notes Walton could be a front for a bizzare James Bond villian, but style makes the man.
 --Chigago Tribune

The real-lifeWalton no doubt resembles the inspiring hard-working, just-folks executive depicted here...
 --Los Angeles Times

I really enjoyed the read...fantastic story...I'm looking forward to reading his other business biographies.

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Vance Trimble records the major reasons for Walton's success...
 --New York Times

From the Author
Sam Walton had a contract with Doubleday to write his life story and hired three top-flightauthors but fired them, one after another. He said he couldn't help me, but stillsneaked me info from time to time. Finally he cancelled Doubleday and offered to consult with me. He, his wife Helen and son Rob checked this manuscript for accuracy, not as censors. Sam liked the book. I had never met him but we became, in the end, I think pretty good friends. I think this is the most complete and truthful story ever written about his life and career.

From the Inside Flap
This extraordinary person is Sam Walton, and this fascinating, superbly researched book pierces his carefully cultivated cloak of ordinariness to show what makes him tick and what has made him succeed beyond the wildest dreams of wealth.
It is a story, and a quest, that began in the dust bowl of Oklahoma in the Depression, where a small boy saw firsthand the razor-thin line between survival and disaster. It was a lesson that stood him in good stead when he took and eighty-five-dollar-a-month job with J.C. Penney and learned the principle of putting customer satisfaction above profits. In 1945, he bought a five-and-dime store in Newport, Arkansas, and began to put his ideas of how to make money to the test. The first Wal-Mart was born. And while the rest is history, the story of Sam Walton is also the story of those ideas and how they worked through good times and bad to create one of the greatest triumphs in the annals of American retailing. And what is most heartening of all about Sam Walton's spectacular success in this era notorious for greed, fraud, and financial shenanigans are his old-fashioned principles of doing business: Horatio Alger virtues of honesty and hard work.
This rags-to-riches tale also reveals what others--both rivals and employees, boosters and critics--think of the wealthiest man in America and his methods. And Sam Walton himself tells how he has coped not only with success but with setback, working sixteen-hour days to pursue his passion for business perfection, while remaining true to himself and devoted to his family. For anyone looking for irresistible reading--and a truly remarkable human being--meet Sam Walton, the plain-folks genius who's utterly unique.

How and Why Sam Walton Invented Wal-Mart
By BEvans
"How and Why Sam Walton Invented Wal-Mart" is a well-written book. It goes into the early background and hardships of growing up without all of the privileges he left his kids. It shows the opportunities that America once provided a young, poor man to get ahead before mega corporations took control of our economy and government. In my personal opinion his creation is a prime example of why we should retain the inheritance tax and lay it on at turn of generations for a better equalization of wealth for the common good. It is an excellent book that everyone should read even if they don't like the present policies of Wal-Mart.--J. Glenn Evans
