I agree with Stephen Law, the book can be read by theist and atheist equally as it provides a comprehensive body of material of well researched information. I particularly liked the use of question and answer format to develop his message.

Trevor Treharne's Book is okay, but Leaves a lot to be Desired

This book is okay for the most part, but it is full of spelling and grammatical errors, and at least one error about the Bible. When he refers to Abraham sacrificing the child of promise, he says it was Ishmael instead of Isaac. I don't know if this was an oversight, or if Treharne just doesn't know the Bible as well as he thinks he does. I think he needs to update it and correct all the aforementioned errors, lest any Christians who might read it out of curiosity notices all these errors (especially the one about Ishmael and Isaac), and comes to think that Trevor Treharne is a small time wannabe, and so feel justified that they are correct and atheists don't know what they are talking about.

Not bad, but could have been done with a lot less words. Prove the bible was written by people who thought the world was flat, and the earth was the center of the universe - it was ok to sell your daughters etc. I could go on, but, you get the idea! To me that's all that needs to be said. (Good read)

Teaches differential equations, engineering, and electrical circuits. It's amazing.

I found this book on my father's shelf and it became a book I had to own for myself.

I had taken differential equations, but didn't understand a damned thing. This book starts by saying "we're engineers. we don't need all of diff. eq., we'll only use the part with easy solutions." And they introduce those solutions - decaying exponentials and decaying exponentials with oscillations. Then, they connect them to engineering through easy-to-visualize physical systems: movable masses connected by springs and dampers. Next, it is more easy-to-visualize physical systems, except rotational: axels with fly wheels, gears, and rotational dampers.

Then they give the great metaphor: Electrical circuits with direct current ("DC") are like the first set of physical systems. Ones with alternating current ("AC") are like the second set.

KAPOW! With that metaphor, I suddenly understood everything. Then the work through examples until you feel comfortable.

There is more to the book - the Transfer function and building analog computers. But this book was great for teaching me the useful part of diff. eq., how to apply it in an engineering context, and how to understand electrical circuits. It is an easy read to a ton of knowledge. If you're even thinking about it, get it.

Art historians have long speculated on how Vermeer achieved the uncanny mixture of detached precision, compositional repose, and perspective accuracy that have drawn many to describe his work as "photographic." Indeed, many wonder if Vermeer employed a camera obscura, a primitive form of camera, to enhance his realistic effects?
In Vermeer's Camera, Philip Steadman traces the development of the camera obscura--first described by Leonaro da Vinci--weighs the arguments that scholars have made for and against Vermeer's use of the camera, and offers a fascinating examination of the paintings themselves and what they alone can tell us of Vermeer's technique. Vermeer left no record of his method and indeed we know almost nothing of the man nor of how he worked. But by a close and illuminating study of the paintings Steadman concludes that Vermeer did use the camera obscura and shows how the inherent defects in this primitive device enabled Vermeer to achieve some remarkable effects--the slight blurring of image, the absence of sharp lines, the peculiar illusion not of closeness but of distance in the domestic scenes. Steadman argues that the use of the camera also explains some previously unexplainable qualities of Vermeer's art, such as the absence of conventional drawing, the pattern of underpainting in areas of pure tone, the pervasive feeling of reticence that suffuses his canvases, and the almost magical sense that Vermeer is painting not objects but light itself.

Did He or Didn't He?

Did the famous Delft artist, Johannes Vermeer, use the camera obscura to create his remarkably photographic paintings? People have been asking that question for a century or more. To help answer it, Philip Steadman has written this great little book. It is truly an enjoyable investigation of Vermeer's acquaintances, studio, and style. My favorite parts of the book are Steadman's photographic reconstructions of Vermeer's paintings. Did Vermeer use the camera? If he did, would that make him an artistic cheat or a visionary? I like a book that leaves me with some things to think about, and this one does the job.

Interesting, scholarly study

Did Vermeer use optical aids, like a camera obscura, in crafting his wonderful paintings: yes or no?

That is the question being asked here. This is a technical question, only, it adds or detracts nothing in Vermeer's ouvre and career either way. It's and interesting question though, and even an important one. What choices did Vermeer make in achieving greatness?

Steadman convincingly argues that Vermeer very likely used a camera obscura, in one form or another, in creating many of his paintings. This work starts with a thorough discussion of the inconclusive written records. Vermeer was certainly contemporary to people like van Leeuwenhoek, who pioneered microscopy, even lived in the same city at the same time. He had long exposure to trades where lenses were used regularly, and lived in a time when lenses were available commercially. All that is circumstantial and, unlike other authors, Steadman declines to read more into available facts than they said in the first place.

His real contribution is in his detailed analyses of Vermeer's paintings and their geometries, and in actual reconstructions of the rooms Vermeer portrayed and tools he might have used. This is the scientific method at work: present a falsifiable hypothesis, and create an experiment that confirms or denies it. "Is shadow in 'The Music Lesson' a credible, literal rendering of an actual scene?" His experiments from the late 80s, rebuilding rooms that match Vermeer's says "Yes." This is a delightful contrast to armchair guesswork by others, such as Wheelock, who never really checked but thought the shadows looked false.

This is a worthwhile historical and technical achievement, partially funded by the BBC for a TV special in 1989. It also stands in clear contrast to Hockney's later work on much the same question, "Secret Knowledge." Hockney asked, as an artist, do these tools give me the experience captured in the old masters' art? His answer, achieved by personal immersion, was also "Yes." I respect Steadman's rigor as a historian and experimentalist, but this work comes off a bit dry compared to Hockney's first-person report.

It's an interesting book on an artist about whom maddeningly little is known. It's thorough, and gives future art historians a very high bar to clear. If not for the hands-on liveliness of Hockney's book, I might have ranked this one even higher.

A Detective Story for Vermeer Lovers

This treasure is actually a mystery novel in the guise of an art book! Steadman cleverly examines the long-held debate over Vermeer's alleged use of camera-like inventions to help create his masterworks. He does so by constructing models of the rooms, examining long-overlooked clues and engaging in some very pragmatic thinking. At times Steadman almost comes across as art history's answer to Lt. Colombo, which is a compliment. This is a very readable and enjoyable book for any art lover who also loves a good mystery, brain teasers, and practical application of optics. My only quibble is that additional illustrations and plates would have helped Steadman make his point better.

Republished books (1-3) with slightly different titles (old books taken down). Great read if you don't already have them.

Ok so I bought and read these books (1-3) in November of 2015 so I was excited to see a book 4 and a prequel but when I went to click on the link to the series, it claimed I had none of the books. I looked closer and these books claim a published date of 2017 and make no mention of having been released earlier. I also noticed a slight title change (old books were The Black Mage: First Year, The Black Mage: Apprentice, and The Black Mage: Candidate). Those books are no longer in the system.

So just beware if you think these seem familiar it may be because they are. I guess they got republished and the old ones taken down but this is kind of foul play since it could sucker you into buying books you have already purchased before.

I really loved these books and am super excited though to have a prequel and a book 4. I'm just not happy about the republishing sleight of hand.

Tacky romance, tacked-on action

I suppose I'm not the target market for the book. I was fooled by the summary and the reviews. I'll try and explain why I didn't like it and why you might or might not like it.

The first thing to understand is that this book is focused on romance first, interpersonal drama second, and action a distant third. The second thing to understand is that the romance is almost a parody of YA female-targeted romance. You have the guy with gemstone colored eyes that change color with his moods. You have the girl who's a scrappy tomboy that isn't confident in her looks. The guy is a complete unrelenting bastard but he occasionally shows off a softer side... only when he's alone with the girl. Also, the guy is super-talented with magic. Also, he's a prince.

Although we open with an action scene the action stuff is then firmly pushed to the back burner. This is really exemplified by the end of year test. We have 22 young combat mages competing for five spots. The first part of the competition is a series of one on one duels. A tournament designed to identify the best fighter? Nope, just one fight each. The second part of the competition is an oral examination grilling the candidates on combat scenarios. This happens off screen. To repeat for emphasis: the author yada-yadas her way through half of the test that is at the center of the climax of the book.

If you're looking for a straightforward romance with a sprinkling of magic stuff in the background, this is for you. If you wanted to cheer for an underdog protagonist as she kicks ass and takes names after learning magic, not so much.

A Fun, Magical Read!

I'm an avid reader and I always have a book that I'm reading. I find that I get bored if I read the same genre all the time so I mix it up to give myself a variety and explore other genres to see how I like different books. I've read some fantasy books and I'd like to get into more but it's hard to know which books I will like. I randomly came upon this book and was interested because I'd never heard of it before and I love books about fantasy and magic. I haven't read Game of Thrones (yet), which is suggested to be for a similar audience as this book. I've read the Hunger Games series, Divergent series, Harry Potter series, as well as a few others in the Young Adult fantasy genre, so I figured I'd give this book a shot since I often enjoy reading YA fantasy books.

Ryiah and Alex are fifteen-year-old girl/boy twins who come from a small town in the kingdom of Jerar. They both have a common goal in mind: to be selected as apprentices at the Academy, one of three schools. Ryiah is a fighter and is very ambitious so her goal is to enter the Combat faction, one of the three factions offered by the school. After their arrival at the Academy, Ryiah discovers how competitive Combat is and the lengths some of her fellow classmates will go to to win an apprenticeship. She also finds that she has romantic feelings for an unlikely person.

I liked this book and it kept me entertained during a couple of flights I was on recently. I can't compare it to Game of Thrones but I noticed similarities between this book and parts of Divergent, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, as well as some romance added in. As with a school setting, there is the typical competition, challenge of making friends, keeping up with studies, and teenage romance. I liked Ryiah's determination and refusal to back down and give up, even though she is considered "lowborn" and gets taunted by some of the "highborns."

Overall, I liked this book and am planning to continue on with the series. I like books involving magic and fantasy so this one suits me well. If you are looking for something new to read and enjoy reading about fantasy, regardless of if you are in the young adult category or not, I recommend reading this book. I'm in my mid-30s and really enjoyed it. I feel it is a light, quick read and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

Canavor and Mierowitz do a wonderful job of orienting people to the ins and outs, ups and downs, and vital essentials for writing professionally in today's media-saturated workplace. They cover everything from Tweets and emails to blogs and proposals. The book is long enough to provide full coverage and short enough for students to actually get through in less than a typical college quarter. It's written in a very approachable style. I use this as one of my texts for a graduate course in Professional Writing, and I recommend it to one and all.

His strong affiliation with the New American Poetry provided a reverse-angle, cross-cultural perspective on one of the liveliest epochs in American letters, with a decisively German slant. His permanent confrontation with the postwar German literary establishment and his envelope-pushing experiments with language, syntax, and semantics led him further and further away from the literary scene. His confrontational nature and volatile personality were feared at readings, and together with his huge creative output and his early death, earned him a reputation as the "James Dean of poetry," a true enfant terrible of contemporary letters. AN UNCHANGING BLUE spans the poetic career of the poet described by Heiner M�ller as "Maybe the only genius in the postwar literature of West Germany." AN UNCHANGING BLUE provides a generous sampling of translations (with German originals) taken from ten collections of Rolf Dieter Brinkmann's poetry published between 1962 and 1975. An extensive introduction by Mark Terrill contextualizes Brinkmann's place in postwar German literature.

About the Author
Rolf Dieter Brinkmann was born in Vechta, Germany, in 1940, in the midst of World War II, and died in 1975, in London, England, after being struck by a hit-and-run driver. During his lifetime, Brinkmann published nine poetry collections, four short story collections, several radio plays, and a highly acclaimed novel. He also edited and translated two important German-language anthologies of contemporary American poetry (primarily Beat and New York School, for which Brinkmann had a particular affinity), and translated Frank O'Hara's LUNCH POEMS into German, as well as a collection of poems by Ted Berrigan, entitled Guillaume Apollinaire ist Tot. In May, 1975, just a few weeks after his death, Brinkmann's seminal, parameter- expanding poetry collection Westw�rts 1 & 2 appeared, which was posthumously awarded the prestigious Petrarca Prize.

While I read this book for my German avant-garde class, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I truly respect Brinkmann's perspective, the chopped up lines, the fragmentation, and the Pop Culture references. Any poet that gives you Godzilla and Eva Braun at the same time is a good poet in my book. If you're a fan of experimental poetry, especially the NY School poets, pick this up as Brinkmann was a huge fan of O'Hara and was influenced greatly by Personism.
