When Dov was about three his mother had a 'nervous breakdown' which is when he remembers seeing his first pencil and knowing precisely what it was that he wanted to do with his life. There are no coincidences in Dov's life. He believes that a hand of destiny has steered his path. Many dramatic encounters (not with aliens or spirits, but with everyday people) have shaped him and he wouldn't have missed any of it. Dov's story is intensely personal and honest, with a powerful combination of humour, emotion and community history. OUT OF LINE attempts to do a few short things. It is an autobiography but it is also an attempt to capture a particular history of a specific generation; that of the Jewish baby boomers who descended from mainly Lithuanian stock. Dov has been a leading South African cartoonist for more than 45 years, and his earliest dream was to work for Walt Disney. He has always known his career was somewhere in drawing. He got to visit Disney World and could not wait to leave. He has never been to Europe or Brakpan and is a pure product of Johannesburg. The last on his wish list was to become a political cartoonist.

Not only is this book hella expensive, but the book didn't come with the McGraw Hill Connect dealio. Which in turn means you have to purchase the access for 50 extra bones. What a bummer :(

Great text

The text I purchased came at a very affordable price and it had minimal inside writings. Some items have changed from this year's edition (2014). I advise those whose professors require the 2014 but still allow the use of 2013 to make sure to have acquaintances in class to compare when numbers are assigned from the exercises at the end of the chapters. In fact, take pictures of a friend's exercise numbers because some questions have been switched around. Also, please take into account the tax changes that may have been imposed in 2014, such as personal/dependency exemption amounts for 2014, and percentages for other exemptions or deductions.

Great way to save money

This is a great alternative to the hard cover book. It includes everything you need, except for the additional Connect software. The books my classmates purchased online and in the book store didn't come with it either, so we were all on the same level as far as resources go. I highly recommend purchasing this version, along with a 3 ring binder (large for the entire book and small to pull out the chapters you're focusing on).

Kindle version coments

The Kindle version of this book lacks page numbers, which makes following it difficult for classroom use when the professor says "on page....". Also in chapter three there is a note regarding the formatting: "Here we follow the convention of writing postulated semantic elements in small capitals to distinguish them from real words." However, in the text, I checked the Kindle version against a classmate's paper version & found that the Kindle version does not have the small caps in the text, making it difficult to make this distinction. Nonetheless, I think it will still be usable - I will update if I find myself needing to return it for a paper version.

Great Reference but not intended for study for a code exam

It is interesting to note that many of the reviewers have bashed this because they were attempting to use this as a study guide for a particular State's Electrician Exam. This book is not intended to be a Code Reference/Guide and is more of a "how it works" reference. As noted there are much better study guides out there for testing purposes. I highly recommend Stallcups Journeyman's workbook or the Master Electrician's workbook if you are wanting to pass the exam. I have taught Journeyman prep classes and used Stallcups and the appropriate edition of the NEC exclusively. Mike Holt's books are also good for exam preparation.

As for the using the index it should be clear after only a cursory examination that it is indexed by section and not by page. This does make it a bit more tedious to look up a particular subject but it is certainly not impossible or unusable.

As for some of the archaic information included- there are still two phase systems in existence, there are houses with knob & tube wiring, we still see 3 phase delta high leg systems, manual motor starters (the old "one arm bandits"), and so on. Just because these are not part of modern wiring methods/systems does not mean that they have ceased to exist altogether.

I have found this to be a great reference and have used it many times to resolve questions that I could find little or no information for anywhere else. It is not an exhaustive reference on any single subject but it is a great reference to give you an overview.

One other observation- Amazon apparently ties the reviews to the book title and not the edition. The reviews here are for previous editions and do not specifically address the 15th edition.

As for my background- I have been a master electrican for over 15 years, am a certified electrical inspector, certified instrument technician, and NETA certified testing technician.

A Gem, with caveats

This is an excellent, if dense read that bridges the gap between the science of electricity, and the practical matter of an Electrician's work. It will not fully explain the science of the topic, and it will certainly not teach you how to wire a house. It is a very good book if your question runs along the lines of "Why does it work that way?" Its treatment of Ohm's law and other fundamentals is particularly useful. That said, the index is a nightmare, the book is not organized by page number, and it contains some apocrypha.

A patchwork monster

Another motley McGraw-Hill product. First copyrighted in 1913. The author appears to have died prior to 1976, and the book has been maintained by hired help. Don't try to use this as a textbook; treat it as a reference only. You never really know whether some item is up to date or 50 or 80 years old. Examples: There is a lot of treatment of two-phase (yup, 90 degrees) power, including at 25 hertz, and of multi-kilovolt series incandescent streetlighting, plus knob and tube wiring. Also, it is stated that the highest radio frequency in use is 30 megahertz, whereas in reality we're up to 1,000 or 2,000 times that just now. This book is a curiousity; charming if you have the cash, but if you don't, maybe you should be getting something more coherent.

About the Author

I believe I am qualified to write this book because God orchestrated it.

My husband, Doug, the subject of the book, has always wanted to glorify God by sharing the circumstances and reasons he is a Christ follower today. For my part, I happen to love to write.

We both desire to serve God and see this book as an extension of that desire. Doug has been sharing bits and pieces of his life with me for the past nine years. Creating this book has been sort of like putting a puzzle together, revealing a beautiful picture once the last piece is put into place. We have attempted to paint the beautiful picture of life with belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. In order to get there, though, it was necessary to go to some very dark places. We hope that sharing Doug's journey will help others to find their way to the loving arms of Jesus Christ. I believe my purpose in life is sharing God's love through encouragement and acts of service. I worked as a mental health social worker for ten years and have been a special educator for the past eight. I am also working on a PhD in Education. I live with my husband and children in Centerville, Ohio.

Absolute must read!

It seems like everyone and their mother has written a testimony book in the past few years, but this book stands head and tattooed shoulders above any that I have ever read. It is eloquently written, while still retaining the bold grit of the man, himself. Well thought out, entertaining, and moving, this book easily earns a 5/5 stars.

Anyone can be saved

With all of the recent uproar of wild motorcycle gangs in the news recently (the Waco shootout), this was a great recent read to remind me that each and every one of them is human, and they all (well, maybe most) have the capacity to change. This is a humanizing and sobering read and a great testament to the Christian faith.

I just finished reading this book. It is an incredible story of one man finding joy and purpose when he'd basically hit rock bottom. God's grace and mercy can reach ANYONE for His purpose and Glory. For those facing really tough times, or just looking for purpose in life, this book nails it.

A page-turner of prose innovation

This is a beautiful and unflinching work, carefully gorgeous in its language and human insight without once groveling for sentimentality. Every page houses another poem of a line ("my mother's love voice telling me that history always happens in the future"), which means that while this book can be read while maintaining 90 RPMs on a recumbent stationary bike, it should not be. Nietzsche breathes in this book, perhaps even to an extent he didn't permit in his own writing, and the ghost his breath keeps bated is Hitler himself. Until finally making an official appearance in the penultimate chapter, Weimar and the Reich haunt three massive sections of the tale, hinting at a future Germania that would extend beyond Nietzsche's life and be all he despised. He would've hated what was done to his work (his corpus-corpse) "after," and that gives this fiction an air of momentous inevitability. There's no beginning and no end: if mortality doesn't get you, the publishers will. This is a smart and lovely piece that dismisses despair in favor of...breath.

insightful and original

I really had fun reading this book. The chapters alternate between different narrative structures, all of them used to get at Nietzsche's psyche at the end of his life from different angles. Readers who know Nietzsche and a few things about his life will probably find it more interesting than those who don't. But the book has great energy. Its structure may be experimental, but its style and attitude are very accessible.

"Nietzsche's Kisses" is many things. Of course, it offers an overview of Nietzsche' life and ideas, but it is also a thorough exploration of perspective and the constitution of self in memory--hinging upon a fervent intensity of experience--and a remarkably successful exercise in stylistic and formal experimentation. Olsen has always been a great stylist, but the prose here has a crystalline radiance that sets it apart even from the rest of his work, as lucid as it is versatile.

Not only that, Nietzsche himself is surprisingly sympathetic, and rendered impossibly well. In a text so aesthetically intense, the immense presence of this living, breathing individual was simply sublime.

At last a book about Vinh Xuan !

I was waiting this book for 20 years ! The only book I know in european language regarding this very complexe school of wing chun (and from Hano� style !).
This book is well done, with nice and clean movement description.
I cannot wait for purchasing the other books of the collection and I hope the books on the 5 animals forms will be release soon ! :)

I am from the william cheung lineage and have a passion for the qigong/internal aspects of wing chun. If you have an open mind and know some of the moves terms this is a great book. I would like to see more terminology crossed over like "ban sao" etc so we have the creative terminology mixed in with the catonese.

The animal form is a rare find!

This includes an understanding of basic economics concepts such as supply and demand, monopoly, market power and marginal cost. The second part of the book asks how a set of generation, load, and transmission resources should be efficiently operated, and the third part focuses on the generation investment decision. Part 4 addresses the question of the management of risk and Part 5 discusses the question of market power. Any power system must be operated at all times in a manner which can accommodate the next potential contingency. This demands responses by generators and loads on a very short timeframe. Part 6 of the book addresses the question of dispatch in the very short run, introducing the distinction between preventive and corrective actions and why preventive actions are sometimes required. About the Author

Dr Biggar is Australia’s leading expert on the economics of wholesale electricity markets and the economics of public utility regulation. Since 2002 he has provided economic advice primarily to the Australian Energy Regulator and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. He has also provided advice to other government agencies including the Australian Energy Markets Operator, the Australian Energy Markets Commission, and the New Zealand Electricity Authority. He has published a number of papers in academic journals in the economics of electricity markets and the economics of public utility regulation and regularly provides training courses in these areas to government agencies and industry. He has a particular interest in the assessment of market power in wholesale electricity markets and in matters related to wholesale market design.

Dr Hesamzadeh is assistant professor in electric power systems division of the school of electrical engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Dr Hesamzadeh is a world leader in the modelling of market power in wholesale electricity markets, particularly in the context of transmission planning. His special fields of interests include Power Systems Planning and Design, Economics of Wholesale Electricity Markets, and Mathematical Modelling and Computing. Hesamzadeh is currently working towards his Docent degree in Electricity Markets at KTH. �
