I think the book is very complete and your approach is similar (but more detailed) to the project management approach that Roger Pressman and I followed in our general software engineering text (so I agree with it). Your coverage is very complete and I agree with the sequencing of topics. The writing is very accessible to upper level undergraduate students and to masters students.

Burton focuses on ways in which African traditions--including those in religion, music, food, dress, and family structure--were transformed by interaction with European and indigenous forces to create the particular cultures of Jamaica, Trinidad, and Haiti. He demonstrates how the resulting Afro-Creole cultures have both challenged and reinforced the social, political, and economic status quo in these countries. Jamaican slaves opposed slavery in many ways and one of the most important, Burton suggests, was the development of Afro-Christianity. He pays particular attention to the African-derived Christmas celebration of Jonkonnu as an expression of opposition and then documents religion in the post-slavery period, with an emphasis on Rastafarianism in Jamaica and Vodou in Haiti. The element of play has always figured importantly in Afro-Caribbean life. Burton examines the evolution of carnival and calypso in Trinidad and describes the significance of cricket in defining Caribbean national identity. Based on ten years of research, Afro-Creole draws on historical, anthropological, sociological, and literary sources. Burton characterizes the emergence of Caribbean identity with three different national flavors and demonstrates how culture both reflects and impacts people's changing sense of their own political power.

An essential book in Caribbean history

This is a really key book if you want to understand the culture and history of the Caribbean. Burton successfully takes us beyond the question of African Survivals and European impositions, and gives us a key for thinking in new ways about the Caribbean as a place in itself. Burton writes clearly and there is little jargon to get in the way of his innovative thoughts on how culture really worked under slavery and then emancipation. Anyone working in the Caribbean or the Atlantic margins of Central America needs to read this book. And if you are thinking about ex-colonial countries anywhere in the world (the USA for example), you will find a lot of innovative and helpful ideas here.

If the IBC would go back to logical locations and cross referencing rather than the multiple cross referencing where we have to go to a half dozen locations to attempt to piece together the needed information it would be great. Back in the UBC days, one Code book the size of a thick paperback gave us the information we needed. Now we have to buy multiple books, poorly cross referenced which seem to be written like a puzzle and when put together approach the IRS standards in quantity of words.

Does anyone really love a code book? Maybe not, but it is an essential part of day to day life of an architect. I do like the fact that Amazon was right priced and quick with delivery! The existing building code is an essential reference if you work on existing structures, the older the more appropriate this code.

About the Author

Christian Ng�, ScD, was formerly executive general manager of ECRIN (�change et Coordination Recherche-Industrie) and scientific director of the Atomic Energy's High Commissioner Office. In 2008, he founded Edmonium Conseil, a consulting company. He has worked in fundamental research for twenty years, and has published approximately 200 papers. Dr. Ng� is the author of ten books in French and has been involved as an energy expert in several studies of the OPECST (Parliamentary Office for Evaluation of Scientific and Technological Options), a common committee of the French Parliament and Senate.

Joseph B. Natowitz, PhD, is currently University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Previously at TAMU, he served as head of the Department of Chemistry and Director of the Cyclotron Institute and held the Bright Chair in Nuclear Science. Among his awards and honors are the American Chemical Society Award in Nuclear Chemistry, the ACS Southwest Regional Award, and the Association of Former Students Research Award at TAMU. Professor Natowitz has served and continues to serve on the program advisory and/or review committees of many national and international research facilities as well as on Advisory Committees for a number of international conferences. Professor Natowitz has published more than 300 research papers.
