TOUR DE FORCE

Eric Weber's first book is a TOUR DE FORCE, in terms of its contribution to existing scholarship on John Dewey and John Rawls. In it, he expertly draws upon Dewey's constructivism in order to critically assess Rawls's Kantian constructivism. Having worked on Rawlsian political philosophy for several years, and as a Dewey scholar myself, I worried that the book would be a mere rehashing of previous scholarly views on the two thinkers' ideas. It is not.

The author offers insightful readings of works by Dewey, Rawls, Peirce, Locke, Hegel and several meta-ethicists. He evaluates the epistemological assumptions behind Rawls's theories of justice and political liberalism in ways that I've never seen before. I learned something new in each chapter. Indeed, I plan to assign the chapter on social contract theories to students in my introduction to social-political philosophy course next term. Since it is so clearly written, the book would make an excellent teaching tool.

I strongly believe that Eric Weber's book proves Robert Talisse wrong. In Talisse's recent paper "John Rawls and American Pragmatisms," he writes: "The fact is that Rawls's views have not been well-received by philosophers who identify as pragmatists. Indeed, today's pragmatists tend to be overtly hostile to Rawls." While Weber is certainly critical of Rawls, he is never "overtly hostile." Rather, his criticisms are leveled in a melioristic spirit, aiming to improve the discourse about Rawls's political ideas by closely scrutinizing their epistemological assumptions from a pragmatist perspective.

Anyone seriously interested in political ideas should DEFINITELY read this book.

A truly beautiful and virtually perfect children's book

The Snail and the Whale is one of the best -- if not THE best -- children's books we've ever read. (And we've read many hundreds by now.) This one excels in every aspect:

1. What a jewel of a story -- about an unlikely friendship, globe-trotting adventure, creative problem-solving and resourcefulness, thinking beyond the confines of one's limitations (perceived or otherwise)...

2. The book is beautifully written. The rhymes and prose flow seamlessly. It's lovely to both read and listen to.

3. The artwork is excellent, too. The pictures are vivid, colorful, and engaging. We've read the book dozens of times by now, and we'll still often notice some new little detail.

This was our first Julia Donaldson book but remains my favorite. The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom have also been hits, and they're also very good. The story and prose quality of The Snail and the Whale are better, in my opinion. But we will try other books by this author. (Thank you for this amazing contribution to children's lit, Julia Donaldson!)

The Kid's Book Trifecta: Drawings, Rhyme, Story

Rarely does a book for little ones hit top marks on the three things that matter most, but this one does - 1) vibrant, clear, colorful and engaging drawings, 2) rhymes that really connect, with strong measures, sophisticated structure, and emphasis and flow that works whether read silently or out loud, 3) a heart warming story with multiple positive messages, (self reliance, friendship, resourcefulness, nerve, imagination, and a general sense of generous good heartedness).

Perfect for bedtime, the story starts calmly, leads our snail and whale friends through interesting and exciting adventures, then turns into a rescue drama, moves on to a happy ending, and then winds down with a calm upbeat conclusion. I can feel the grandchild drifting off with a happy smile as the story concludes. Plenty to look at, lots to think about - just a solid, satisfying, engaging and rewarding read for both your youngster and, possibly, you. A very nice choice.

I got a bit tongue tied the first couple times through, but its a permanent collection keeper!

I got a but tongue tied the first couple times I read this book I'm not going to lie! Just like all of this authors stories, it's written like a poem, to a very nice rythem.
The structure of the story was great in the sense that it made my brain work a little to read it (how many toddler books do that!?!) And my 2.5 year old ADORES the story. She actually can now quote a lot of it (and all of The Gruffalo's Child (another of our alltime favorites, by this author).

I've probably read this book 50 times to her since purchase a few weeks ago and forsee many, many, more times for years to come. It will go in our permanent collection.

Understand the audience before you purchase

I see other reviewers have already made my main complaint about this book. For a book that is supposed to focus on the User Experience in an authoritative manner, I find the titles and sub-titles very misleading... which leads to a bad user experience.

"Killer UX Design", "Wow your visitors", "The Complete Guide to Creating Compelling User-Centered Designs"

As a UI developer associated with a UX team, I think I understand the difference between UI and UX - with UI being one element of the broader UX, yet the way this book was named and presented led me to believe there would be a lot more focus on cool, modern UI concepts. In reality, while the case study UI is interesting, it's not ground-breaking, and makes up a very small portion of the book.

This is really a book about the UX design PROCESS, and the months of research done prior to doing any kind of UI or development. It is NOT a book about UI. There is not much here for the typical garage developer (although there are some very good nuggets of information to absorb).

However, if your team is robust enough to take on the discipline of formal up-front design, complete with methodologies for user testing, focus groups, market research, and all the rest, then this book is gold... well written, and full of great information.

So, for the right audience, this book earns a 4, or even 5 star rating. Had the name and descriptions properly reflected its true audience, I would happily give it the 4 or 5 star rating, but for the average developer, who might get excited by the title of this book, be warned that this probably isn't what you're looking for. So, based on my unexpected "user experience", I can't really justify more than a 3.

Introductory book; Clearly written.

Should be titled "Introduction to UX Research and Design Processes for Designers". "Killer UX Design" is hyped title. Begins with clear explanations on the necessity for collecting customers' needs information and goals, and takes the reader through the design process, always emphasizing the objectives of the initial collected information and goals. Written for designers to help them understand the business goals and the design process; not as much on the design itself. Very clearly written!

The problem with reviewing books of this nature is that it's purely subjective to the reader's experience.

I found the title, KILLER UX DESIGN, to be misleading. To me, "KILLER UX DESIGN" implies advanced techniques, processes and future UX trends. Instead, I got basic advice on how important it is to have meetings and case studies that discuss UX needs and advice to "Get My Stationary On." Hmm ... this strikes me as very fundamental--not "killer."

That's not to say there isn't useful information to be found here. In fact, if you're new to UX concepts and preparation, then this is actually a great starting place and very much on par with the "For Dummies" series in terms of comprehension. If you've been doing this for a while and you're looking for "killer" concepts, then you may find this reference to be as lackluster as I did.

About the Author
Stephen A. Mitchell (1946–2000) was a leader in the field of modern psychoanalysis. An adjunct professor and clinical supervisor at New York University's postdoctoral program in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, Mitchell’s emphasis on the relational perspective shaped the way that American psychoanalysts practice their profession. He was the founding editor of the journal Psychoanalytic Dialogues and the author of several influential books, including Object Relations in Psychoanalytic Theory and Hope and Dread in Psychoanalysis.

Margaret J. Black, LCSW, is founding board member of the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies. She is also a board director of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies, a founding board member and vice president of International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, an associate editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues, and a member of the editorial board for Studies in Gender and Sexuality. She holds a BA from the University of Michigan and an MS from Columbia University, and is a graduate of the Analytic Institute, Postgraduate Center.

A classic text on psychoanalytic theory but **not really a new edition.

Overall this is a classic summary of the different schools of psychoanalysis since Freud, described in the lucid style we have come to expect by the late Stephen Mitchell. However, other than a new forward, the book seems word for word unchanged from the prior edition. The clinical examples therefore come across as dated, and the chapters on 'contemporary' theorists and "controversies" are stale. So I regard the label "new edition" as deceptive on the part of the publishers..

An unprecedented introduction to Wittgenstein's philosophy of mathematics

This is an excellent, much needed introduction to Wittgenstein's philosophy of mathematics. It is of great worth that it is presented thematically, that is, by an analysis of the major themes of the crisis of fundamentals of mathematics at the beginning of the XX century. On the other hand Wittgenstein's place in such crisis is usually neglected, so this book "completes", in a certain way, the different aspects of the crisis because Wittgenstein cannot be properly sided with "intuitionism" (Brouwer et alt.); on the other hand Wittgenstein's "constructivism" is definitely closer to it, and this book helps in clarifying its coincidences and differences.

But Wittgenstein's philosophy of mathematics is key to unravel his philosophy in general; actually, in my opinion, there's no way to properly understand his thought without dealing with his philosophy of mathematics; for it originally developed, precisely, from his peculiar version of "logicism", as expressed in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, where the human conception of reality as a whole, through language, is grounded on logic. Then, his later philosophy whereby language resolves "constructively" as a game, is also inspired by his philosophy of mathematics. It is indeed a historical "calamity" that Wittgenstein could not complete his last major work, his Philosophical Investigations, as it was originally intended, namely, with his later philosophy of mathematics.

Anyway, and again, I don't think that his general philosophy can be understood without studying his philosophy of mathematics, and I can't think of a better introduction to it as this one by Prof. Mathieu Marion.
