Good read!

I enjoy a good memoir. It seems there's always something good to learn from other people's life experiences. And while I'm not a huge Tina Fey fan, I enjoyed her as Sarah Palin on SNL and occasionally watch 30 Rock. So after reading a review of the book, and being without anything to read at the moment, I took a chance and bought Bossypants, and I'm glad I did.

It seemed a little uneven starting out, but quickly transitioned into some very interesting pieces about her early jobs, her work with Second City, and then her transition into writing for SNL and her eventual creation of 30 Rock. Interspersed are stories about growing up and dating, her eventual marriage, and her struggles to balance work and family life, as well as some candid advice for other women on how to make it in a male-dominated industry.

Perhaps what I liked most about the book is that even though there is a lot of self-deprecating (and distancing) humor, my sense in the end was that Fey gave us an honest look at who she is: imperfect, stumbling, but always rising again, persevering, and continuing to do what she loves. I would say the book is well worth reading for any fan of Tina Fey, 30 Rock, or SNL, as well as for any woman who struggles to balance the roles of worker, spouse and mom. It was a good read!

Almost Perfect

I almost gave this book 5 stars, and it is damn near perfect.

Let's start with the good stuff:
- It's extremely funny. And not just "laugh out loud" funny, but "laugh *so* out loud your spouse asks you to go read in another room because you're keeping him awake" funny. If you enjoy Tina Fey's humor, you'll really appreciate this book. It's damn funny.

- It's (unexpectedly) full of really good advice about how to be a good boss. I mean, maybe I should have gleaned that from the title but I expected it to be more of a comedic autobiography than a sincere look at how to effectively manage people. And she's got some really great thoughts in this book about how to be a leader.

- Where books by other comedians are pretty much only for laughs (see: Chelsea Handler), this book also contains some social critique. And, not in a preachy way - in a very funny way. But Fey raises some excellent questions about how women treat each other, being a working mom, dealing with institutionalized sexism, and other hilarious topics!

I found myself wanting to know a bit more about SNL, or 30 Rock, but she keeps those experiences (and her personal life) at a pretty surface level. It appears to be a very conscious choice, and one I respect; you can tell she doesn't want to be a tell-all kind of person, and she's not interested in being the sort of celebrity that rips her whole life open for all to see.

All-in-all, I loved this book and devoured it in one day (not an easy feat with two preschool-aged kids running around).

My only gripe is that it's a little hard to tell what this book is trying to be. It's part comedy, part biography and part managerial guidance/life lessons. Not that that's a bad combination - it was just a little unexpected. And, at times, felt a little jumpy.

Don't set your hopes too high; a reluctant memoir

Like most women of my generation, I am a fan of Tina Fey. She is a weekly beacon of joy in a sea of unlikable, unrelatable portrayals of women in the media. So it kills me that I didn't like her book!

Two things:

1. Her dry, punchy humor is wonderful for writing performances, but I don't think it works well in long format. She's not so much the best story-teller. Rarely did I find myself captivated by anything in the book or wanting to read more, which made me feel like....

2. She's a very reluctant memoir-writer. The tone often made me feel like I was intruding somehow by reading what she wrote. There are points where she outright says she doesn't want to discuss certain events (*perfectly* understandable.) But her stories feel glossed-over and the people she discusses feel liks frameworks of characters.

(I loved the chapter about her father. It felt rich and I totally understood who he was and how he shaped her life. If the rest of the book had been like that, it would've been great.)

Love Tina Fey and I'll continue to watch 30 Rock like a junkie. But it kills me that I'm not recommending this to my friends. (I'm not a total downer: if you want a fun memoir, I'd choose Kathy Griffin's instead... just because I think she's a bit better at crafting a story.)

During the last decade, several books have been written on the great economic potential of China and India, projecting them to be the engines of global economic growth of the twenty first century. Their huge population and a very low base of per capita income were indeed considered to be the very basis that would unleash unprecedented demand for all goods and services, to meet the needs of billions, thanks to the forces of global economic convergence.

While China opened up in 1979, India did so in 1991, and since then both these countries are marching ahead at great speed, in economic terms, compared to the rest of the globe. Global companies that had largely ignored these markets, suddenly realise that they need these markets very badly, not just for growth, but sometimes for their very existence in the transformed global market and value chain in the coming decades.

This book is an excellent work by BCG Consultants, based on in-depth research, feet on the ground approach to estimate the market size for goods and services in China and India in the current decade. As the title aptly says, the annual opportunity is $10 Trillion, by 2020. While China would account for $ 6.2 Trillion, India would be about $ 3.6 Trillion. Cumulatively it would exceed $ 60 Trillion for the decade.

To put this in perspective and to understand the opportunity, the lifetime consumption of a child born in India in 2009 would be 13 times that of his elder citizen born in 1960. This figure for China is a whopping 38 x.

The authors have done insightful analysis and excellent presentation of market segmentation based on per capita incomes of the super-rich, the growing middle class, the bottom poor, demographics, urban-rural consumption patterns, aspiration and key drivers that shape buying behaviour and the resultant demand.

Product sector analysis of how this huge demand would spread across different industry verticals - Food, Housing, Transport, Communication, Health care, Clothing etc., are discussed in detail.

The best part of the book is the finding and presentation that these countries need a very different kind of mind-set and business strategy to succeed. This means that mere replication of products and processes in the developed world are simply prescriptions for failure, for global giants in China and India. These countries need products that are ultra-low cost and multi functionality (called "paisa vasool" in India), innovative business processes and a frugal mind set. While western MNCs have highly advanced technologies and deep pockets and vast experience, reliance on their successful strategies in the West would be their proverbial Achilles heel in China and India.

Local competitors are Ambitious, Aggressive, Audacious and Adaptive to the hilt. These companies for example talk of 10x10, which means 10 times growth in 10 years, which might sound highly impossible and probably lunatic in the developed West. They have an Accelerator mind-set, and are PHD's (Poor, Hungry and Driven).

Interesting Read

The $10 Trillion Prize is clearly bullish on China and India, but the optimism is not unfounded. The authors present a wealth of data to back up their assertions about the growth potential of these two consumer markets. On top of that, there are numerous and colorful anecdotes, like the one about a woman farmer in China who built a new house with a two-car garage even though she didn't own a car yet. Just goes to show the ambitions and anticipated purchasing power of the rising middle class in these countries. Well worth a read.

Red Hot Writing is right! Highly Recommend

I first met Lorrie at a Bootcamp for Writers. I'd never heard of her before. There she was in a red jacket, beaming as she took center stage. There was something about her -- something that buzzed with a positive and genuine energy. As Lorrie started speaking, the energy in the room amplified. More importantly, as she spoke, I found my energy and excitement for writing explode!

Red Hot Quick Start Guide

Just purchased my very first ebook and I can't believe how easy it is. I started reading this ebook and was able to get started on my own sales copy right away. Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero has written a step-by-step guide that instantly draws you into the page. Her companion PDF has templates to help lay out my sales letter like a puzzle coming together. I would have expected to pay so much more for this product. I can't believe my good fortune. With this kind of good luck I should go to the casino, I'm surely a winner today. Upon the death of the celebrated British actress Fanny Kemble (1809-1893), her confidant and admirer Henry James said she had written some of the best autobiography of her day. But that autobiographical writing runs to thousands of pages, a bit much for the casual reader. So Kemble's biographer, historian Catherine Clinton (Fanny Kemble's Civil Wars, Forecasts, July 10), has edited a slender volume, selecting the juiciest, most revealing and most incisive sections of Kemble's oeuvre. Having married a Southern plantation owner, Pierce Butler, Kemble became an outspokenAand, because of her fame and her husband's station, controversialAcritic of the South's peculiar institution. Clinton presents a range of writings on both personal and political subjects. There are those who say Fanny Kemble was born to the stage; others would argue that she was born to write, especially about contemporary England and America. These excerpts from Kemble's diaries, letters, and memoirs attest to her singularity as an observer. Married to a slave owner (whom she later divorced), the English-born Kemble became fiercely opposed to slavery, and her writings on the subject are stirring, fearless, and crusading. In 1863, believing Britain that might side with the Confederacy, Kemble published her antislavery writings (written years earlier) in England, winning many to the abolitionist side. Her views on overseers, the whipping of slaves, their funerals, literacy, mixed-race children, and freedom are sure to make readers bow to Kemble and her pen. Her views on acting, marriage, childbirth, children, motherhood, America, secessionist politics, and the status of women demonstrate a rare intelligence, passion, and imagination. Fanny Kemble's Journals

I was attracted to this book after I saw the movie, Enslavement, based on the life of Fanny Kemble who lived before, during and after the Civil War. This book uses exerpts from her letters and journals to tell the story of her adult life, but it does not contain all of her written material. She published several journals, letter collectiions, and plays. Fanny was a remarkable woman, obviously much before her time. She was unusually independent and energenic, and her writing includes few of the steriotypes typical of the period. However, we are able to see how the customs of society restricted her ability to act, especilly her efforts to help eliminate slavery and improve the life of her husband's slaves. Because of her popularity as an actress she was able to earn a living after divorcing her husband, but he had control over their children until they reached adulthood. This book gives unusual insight into the lifestyles and concerns of the period. It actually reads like a novel.

Great Look into the mind of a powerful women

I must say, I have never seen insight so dignified on such a subject in all my years of book review. When I read this book, every page enlighten me with an overwhelming sensation of sadness, guilt, freedom and anger. Every one of my emotions were totally stimulated by this master piece of modern society. Regardless of the date in which Fanny published this book, it still leaves a gruesome reminder of the pure agony suffered from the hands of Prejudice and Hate. I have just finished watching the TV movie of Fanny's story, and I am absolutely blown away by the extreme emotional precision used in creating this film. Let this film and this book be a lasting reminder, to the youth of our age. It is important for the younger teenage generations of this new century, understand the facts of what had to be done, to win them the lives they have today. I rate this book 5 plus stars. A Fascinating Insight into Slavery

Fanny Kemble provides us with a unique and courageous account of the 'peculiar institution' that was thrust upon her by her marriage to Pierce Butler, the wealthy scion of a Southern plantation owner.
Already a celebrated actress when she came to America, Fanny was well-educated and accustomed to earning her own living when she married Pierce. It was only after traveling from Philadelphia to Butler Island, near Darien, Georgia, that she became aware of the full horror and degradation of slavery. She toured the plantation, helped to nurse the sick, did what she could to improve their conditions, and opened her door to all who dared to air their grievances, much to the dismay of her husband. Eventually, their disagreements on these points led to a divorce, and Fanny returned to Europe where she resumed her theatrical career.
This volume also contains Fanny's letters to friends and confidants that provide a valuable insight into the cultural climate in England as well as America for much of the 19th century.
These journals and letters are not only entertaining, but a must for any serious student of American history.
