The Reverend Carol Howard Merritt tells her own story of moving from the punishing theology of her childhood to a new understanding of love, mercy and forgiveness. Yet this is not a memoir; it is a trail guide designed to help the reader make a similar journey. Recognizing our wounds allows us to undertake our healing, the healing God wants for all of us.

Howard Merritt grew up in the evangelical church. While attending Bible college, she made a turn in her theological understandings and became an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Her past books, Tribal Church: Ministering to the Missing Generation (Alban/Rowman and Littlefield, 2007) and Reframing Hope: Vital Ministry in a New Generation (Alban/Rowman and Littlefield, 2010), provided resources based in a deep understanding of cultural changes and generational shifts the mainline church seemed reluctant to acknowledge. Now she turns her gaze to the tradition that formed her, and to the injuries inflicted by a controlling, patriarchal system.

The chapters are organized around areas in our lives that might need healing from wounds inflicted by the church: our image of God, our emotions, our broken selves, our bodies, our hope, even our finances. Howard Merritt shares pieces of her personal story as well as the experiences of others whose stories illustrate each concept. At the end of every chapter, she includes exercises designed for use by individuals or groups. The exercises employ scripture, art, encounters with nature, journalling and other forms of reflection. A range of questions prompt the reader to consider and reconsider events that may have been harmful. I found the prompts to be creative, gentle, and pastoral.

I grew up in a downtown Southern Baptist church that didn’t seem to differ much from the mainline downtown churches of my childhood, and I have done a lot of psychological and spiritual work over the past thirty years. I thought, as I began reading, “This book will be a great tool for others.” As I got in deeper, I recognized the places where I learned something new years ago that I accepted intellectually, but never at the heart or gut level. Any of us who grew up influenced by the patriarchy can find some good work to do with this beautiful book.

Carol Howard Merritt is an intellectual force in the life of the 21st century church, an artist and a mystic, and a genuine example of a faithful Christian who has done and is doing her work. This book is recommended for individuals and groups, for men and women, for anyone who has been hurt by the church or wonders what people mean when they say they have been hurt by the church. Contemplative and Hopeful.

I am a friend of Carol Howard Merritt, and my wife, Candasu, is an even closer one. I have had the pleasure of hearing about the genesis of this book for some time through Candasu, who read an earlier version and offered notes. (She is mentioned in the acknowledgements.)

The book was worth the wait. Merritt does a great job of naming the most salient causes of spiritual wounds for people who have encountered hurtful religion: Physical, sexual, emotional, and spiritual abuse and the rush to blame victims for their own abuse; patriarchy and complementarian theology that teaches women they are lesser beings; homophobia and shame of our bodies and sexuality; and a "transactional" view of relationships that teaches us that we are only worth the money and wealth we possess. Rather than dwelling at length on the pervasiveness of these sources of spiritual wounds-- and they are pernicious and widespread-- Merritt focuses on ways to help those who have been wounded, but want to retain a connection to their spirituality, find a way forward.

I found Merritt's discussion of finances and the "transactional" view of relationships refreshing and helpful. It's not what I am used to seeing discussed in this context, but shame and exploitation around finances and debt is widespread, both within churches and without. I work in a law practice that does consumer law and personal bankruptcy, and I can attest to the crippling shame and crisis of self-worth that comes with being in debt over your head. Merritt discusses those issues with sensitivity and real insight.

My advice to anyone inclined to read this book who doesn't already know the author and her other work would be to prepare to read it twice. The first read-through will give you a sense of the overall framework of the book and Carol's overall perspective towards spiritual life and spiritual healing. The second read will give you an opportunity to work through the helpful spiritual exercises that accompany each chapter.

Heart-filled Hope.

This much awaited book arrived, and I devoured it. Carol Howard Merritt generously takes us readers on a healing journey. Her poetic voice and heart-filled hope is compelling reading. And I'm moved by the way that this deep personal story offers practical steps for anyone on a path of religious recovery when so many of us, of all faith traditions and practices (or none) have been harmed by "spiritual" leaders and institutions. In connecting tradition with women's wisdom, Healing Spiritual Wounds is a companion, a guide and a comfort. Thank you Carol for your words and inspiration.

Book both extremely annoying & helpful! Includes a 6 month update.

I can't give this book 5 stars because it annoyed me so many times, for valid reasons I will explain.
Despite that, I must give it 4 stars because it educated me so well on breastfeeding.
To explain the positive: this book is a wealth of information about breastfeeding. I know many women who stopped breastfeeding due to reasons cited in this book. Had they read this book they may well have found solutions to their problems and continued breastfeeding.
I feel well-prepared to breastfeed our baby, reading this book was like doing my homework, I feel like I studied the subject well and will know what to do if any problems arise. I also feel I will know how to prevent problems from happening. After reading this book, I even feel more confident that I will succeed in my goal of breastfeeding for a year (or a year and a half) thanks to the tips and techniques in this book.
The book is EXTREMELY informative, useful, my copy is dogeared and I'm sure I'll revisit it for information as I begin breastfeeding.
I cannot reiterate enough times HOW MUCH I LEARNED from this book. I deeply appreciate that. So, I give 4 stars. I would have given 5 except for the following things which I disliked:
1) The authors continuously make cases for breastfeeding, in defense of breastfeeding, & reiterate (ad naseum) how bad formula is. I KNOW this. My mom breastfed me and my 4 siblings. I come from a family of breastfeeding women. I wholeheartedly believe in the extraordinary benefits of breastfeeding and plan to give our baby breast milk for health reasons. I don't like the idea of formula unless absolutely necessary, (but to you formula feeders out there, don't be offended as those are simply MY feelings, for MY self. I don't push my beliefs on others at dinner parties or on the street lol).
2) They are CLEARLY proponents of "attachment parenting" which I do not agree with. I am NOT baby wearing round the clock. PLUS, our baby is blessed with an affectionate, loving, sweet, gentle man of a father anyone could ask for and he will also feed our little one pumped breast milk from bottles. They really leave fathers out of the equation and clearly don't like the idea of sometimes bottle feeding the breast milk so mom can get a break (and so Dad can bond with his little one!) also, if the dad sometimes feeds the baby, the baby will more likely accept milk from the father, bedtime with father, if father sometimes handles night feedings, and also baby sitters. There is very little support or mention on others bonding with baby. Dad may as well not exist. But there are a lot of amazing fathers out there!
3) They don't believe in mom taking breaks. They clearly think you must get up to breastfeed for years on end. They do not care if mom ever sleeps through the night ever again, they actually talk about you waking up for night feedings way down the line (two years) when your baby can certainly sleep through the night without a feeding.
4) They are not into bottles at all. They seem to think bottles and breast pumps are so inferior to your breast because your baby has to be glued to your body day and night, because they need skin on skin contact blah blah blah. I know that the longer breast milk is stored in the fridge or freezer, the more it loses antibodies, but sometimes a bottle of breast milk is a help!
5) They repeatedly advise cosleeping, which is not feasible for everyone.
6) They seriously try to argue that babies should be breastfed for YEARS, until they decide to wean. I kid you not. They talk about nursing up to five and seven years. I found that kind of gross, and I personally was breastfed by my mom until I weaned quite late (almost 2 years old). Still, the concept of a child in kindergarten breastfeeding is strange to me.
They even cite a research study that children who aren't breastfed until age 3 have a much higher death rate. It's not referring to American children who have good food and water. I'm sure if you live in a third world country with contaminated water and poor food supply, breastfeeding would make your child healthier. But to say that we should breastfeed for 3 years or risk compromising our children's immune systems is pretty far fetched. I aim to give our child two years of breastfeeding, and perhaps continue to pump milk for the sake of the antibodies and nurtients. I don't see why giving cow's milk would be better than human mama's milk in a sippy cup.
7) As some other reviewers noted, there is an underlying, not-so-subtle, continuous pounding away at the need to constantly breastfeed, to constantly give give give to your baby, to be always attached, to sleep with, etc. It is rather overkill.

So, you ask, why do I give 4 stars to a book that clearly bothered me and put me off so much? Because the information on breastfeeding was so excellent, I slogged through the muck in order to absorb all that information so I can put it to use for our baby's benefit.
If you edited out all that biased, repetitive, sometimes far-fetched material, you would be left with a fine compilation of comprehensive, detailed, useful, and obviously expert advice. I can imagine many a mother saved by reading a paragraph in the book. There are countless gems of advice.
It was well worth the read.

UPDATE:
I have now been exclusively breastfeeding our baby since she was born, over 6 months ago. We started introducing solids at 6 months (as recommended by the World Health Organization) but she's not too interested in solids yet. Which is ok. Breastfeeding is going great and she's absolutely thriving, mentally, physically, and emotionally. The advice and knowledge from this book has been extremely helpful.
Again, the book did help me a few times when we were confused about quantities, supply changing, what was healthy, what was normal... tips and pointers, and also, holy COW! Cluster feeding, WOW, the book helped me stay steady during those crazy cluster-feeding times, when we called her a "milk-a-holic" so the book was a huge help, despite the nutty stuff in the book that I mentioned.
I also helped me avert problems when she had a bout with jaundice at birth and they tried to get us to give her formula, but I knew from the book that it could cause problems so I insisted on them giving me a hospital pump and I pumped and fed her colustrum with perfect success, so she was able to just breastfeed and I maintained my milk supply. My friend didn't know to do that, and the same thing happened to her in the hospital and it messed up the breastfeeding relationship and despite her devoted efforts, her supply was lowered and she has had to supplement breast milk with formula ever since, which was problematic as her little one didn't tolerate ANY formula well, had stomachaches and vomited up even the most expensive, organic stuff on the market, but she doesn't have enough breastmilk - would you believe, I was able to donate some of my extra milk to her baby - what an honor to be able to help out.
Also my baby had a minor surgery at age 3 weeks and was to be separated from us during the operation and unable to eat for 12 hours but thanks to this book, I knew to demand a pump to maintain supply and prevent engorgement.
This book also helped me prevent any clogged ducts, pain, chapped nipples (hint - use breast milk - no need for the fancy creams I was given, just dabbing some breast milk on after each nursing worked better).

So, 4 stars for immense value and dearth of information. 1 star deducted for annoying, far-fetched, extreme views, and repetition.
PS: be advised there is nothing "simple" in this book, other than the word "simple" in the title. It is like a text book on breast feeding, and it made me aware how much more complicated breast feeding is than I ever imagined! But it gets easier and easier and it makes our baby so happy and comforted!

This book was an AWESOME READ! I struggled to nurse with my first son because he had a poor latch and was a VERY slow eater - 45 mins+ at each feeding! (Try doing that every 2 hours and you get NOTHING else done in life!) I ended up pumping exclusively for 9 months and it about wore me out. I was a slave to that pump and to the clock!

When I got pregnant again 5 yrs later I was determined to better educate myself about nursing so I could slam dunk the nursing experience with my new baby. I came across this book and read it cover to cover. Within the first 2 chapters I found out I was doing at least 3 things WRONG in nursing my first son! Let me tell you... this book was a GOD SEND and a huge eye opener. This book had a TON of information in it. My 2nd son is now 8.5 mos old and is a nursing champ! I also started taking Fenugreek daily (2 pills in AM and 2 in PM) from the first week I was home from the hospital. Let me tell you - I am a milk making machine!!! I have about a 4-5 month supply in a deep freezer and most of that came from the extra milk I pumped AFTER NURSINGS. I think because I educated myself and understood the milk making process, how to latch appropriately, how to position myself to be comfortable, etc, I could relax, take it easy and enjoy my nursing relationship with my son.... thus making more milk. It was also a great reference tool many times in the first several months.

Nursing is certainly NOT easy for everyone. And it is a huge committment no matter who you are. (I stuggled with the latch with my 2nd son for several weeks. But, I didn't give up & I consulted a professional who helped me fix the problem quickly!) Since reading this book I have purchased 3 more copies to give as baby shower gifts to future nursing mommies and have loaned my copy out a couple of times already.

After talking to other moms who gave up nursing quickly I am SO glad I purchased this book. I spent maybe $12 for the book but it has helped me SAVE Over $1200 by not buying formula. Seems that most of my friends have babies with sensitivities to every formula except the SUPER EXPENSIVE one @ $40+/can tub. (That is because a mom's milk is MADE for HUMANS!! Cow's milk is not!!) I'll bet they are kicking themselves for not sticking with the nursing! Nursing is FREE...
My son is also super healthy and has only gotten a little sniffle once in 8.5 mos(and he goes to a nursery 5 days a week!) I attribute that to his strong immune system compliments of my "boobie juice!" (as my husband calls it!) Yay - only well check doctor visits ROCK!

If you are on the fence about this book... Just get it and read it. You won't be disappointed. The info can only help you. When you are done with it... pass it on and help another mommy out!

I just wanted to give a quick update. I LOVED this book, obviously. After implementing all of the tips from this book I was successfully able to nurse exclusively for 16 months!!! He never had a sip of formula. I did pump a lot after I went back to work but I always nursed when I was home with him. The bottles were taken to the nursery when I was working or frozen for later use. STILL recomending this book 2.5 yrs later! :)

Great book with a big CON in my opinion. Read during pregnancy don't wait until your baby is borned!!

I did like this book and recommend it specially BEFORE you give birth. I'll say that from week 30 and on it's the time to read about breastfeeding. It has all the info you need to be ready and prepared if any problem should arrise during breastfeeding and it probably will. I loved that it's supported by tons of research and not just experience.
What I didn't like is that it a big breastfeeding supporter and it practically doeasn't mention any tips on bottle feeding breat milk. I think that in todays world every mother is entitled to decide what's best for her family. If I want to breastfeed until my son/daughter is five years old, great but if I want my husband or partner to bottlefeed breast milk at night or need to take my baby to daycare or whatever a breastfeeding book should have some information on different types of bottle or when to start, pros, cons etc. What I mean is you provide the information I make my choices. This book does not provide that type of information, hence, 4 stars.
I also read "The Breastfeeding Mother's Guide to Making More Milk" (thanks to a review here in Amazon) and I loved that book, I think it's very thorough it's not just about making milk but a comprehensive guide to breastfeeding with tons of information and not so bias.

Adam Burke, PhD, MPH, LAc Adam Burke is a Professor in the department of Health Education and the Director of the Institute for Holistic Health Studies at San Francisco State University (SFSU). He holds advanced degrees in the social/behavioral sciences from UCLA and the University of California Santa Cruz, as well as being trained as an acupuncturist in San Francisco and in Sichuan, China. About the Author
George Helffrich is a Professor of Seismology in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol. His research interests include using observational seismology to study features of the crust, mantle and core. Recently, he has based his analysis techniques on large-scale seismic array data, using SAC as the primary seismological data analysis tool. Before embarking on his research career, Professor Helffrich was a programmer who developed and supported mainframe operating systems. Bringing this experience to the seismological realm, he has contributed to the development of SAC for over twenty years.

James Wookey is a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol. His research focuses on observational seismology, particularly seismic anisotropy, applied to problems from the inner core to oil reservoirs, with a recent focus on Earth's core-mantle boundary region. Dr Wookey has spent much of his research career developing and applying novel methods for analysing seismic data, and comparing them with predictions from mineral physics and geodynamics to better understand Earth processes. His experience with SAC spans fifteen years, including as contributor to its development.

Ian Bastow is Lecturer in Seismology in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. His research focuses primarily on the analysis of broadband seismological data from networks of temporary seismograph stations to better understand the Earth's crust and mantle. Dr Bastow has worked extensively on tectonic problems concerning the seismically and volcanically active East African rift system, as well as on the development of Laurentia, the Precambrian core of North America. He has been a user of SAC for over a decade.

About the Author
Louise Crawford is Associate Dean, Research and Senior Lecturer of Accounting at the School of Business, University of Dundee. After working as a post-doctoral research scientist at St Andrews University, Louise trained with KPMG to become a Chartered Accountant with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, practicing predominantly in corporate audit. Iain Gray acquired extensive practical auditing experience with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Germany and Italy. He was for many years Principal Lecturer and Head of Auditing at Sheffield Hallam University and is formerly Chair of the Auditing Special Interest Group of the British Accounting and Finance Association. Stuart Manson is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. He is presently a Professor of Accounting in Essex Business School at the University of Essex where he lectures on auditing and financial reporting. He has written a number of articles in academic journals and co-authored a number of research monographs in the areas of auditing and financial reporting.
