David Copperfield (Macmillan Collector's Library Book 53), by Charles Dickens

In one of his most energetic and enjoyable novels, Charles Dickens tells the life story of David Copperfield, from his birth in Suffolk, through the various struggles of his childhood, to his successful career as a novelist. The early scenes are particularly masterful, depicting the world as seen from the perspective of a fatherless small boy, whose idyllic life with his mother is ruined when she marries again, this time to a domineering and cruel man. David Copperfield is partly modelled on Dickens' own experiences, and one of the great joys of the book lies in its outlandish cast of characters, which includes the glamorous Steerforth, the cheerful, verbose Mr Micawber, the villainous Uriah Heep, and David's eccentric aunt, Betsey Trotwood. Dickens described it as his 'favourite child' among his novels and it is easy to see why.

This Macmillan Collector's Library edition of David Copperfield features original illustrations by H. K. Browne 'Phiz', with an afterword by Sam Gilpin.

Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift editions of much loved classic titles. Macmillan Collector's Library are books to love and treasure.

Beautiful but fragile.
By Brian in Utah
If you need a recommendation for the story here it is: read this book. It is a wonderful exploration of relationships with character's you'll love and feel like you know personally. Five stars for this engaging masterpiece.

But, chances are, you are more interested in this particular edition. It is beautiful but fragile. A barcode sticker placed on the back removed some of the paint/dye/coloring on the back--not what you want when you are looking to purchase a nice copy of a book for your library. Not sure how it will hold up over time but the indication is that it won't be very good--at least not the images on the cover.

As an additional piece of information, this edition includes illustrations.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-From the very first chapter of this exciting story by Donna Jo Napoli (Dutton, 2001), listeners will be hooked. Eleven-year-old Jackie and her father are on a driving tour of Italy when her dad suffers a fatal heart attack. He manages to stop the car on the side of the road before he passes out. Jackie tries to get help, and finally two Italian men stop and take her into their car. Instead of taking her to the police, they drive her to a cottage in the Italian countryside where she is forced to stay. None of these individuals speak English, and Jackie doesn't speak Italian. A woman feeds and cares for Jackie. Jackie doesn't understand why they won't let her go to the police and get home to her mother. She finally realizes that she has been brought there as a replacement for the woman's dead daughter. Julie Dretzin does a wonderful job of narrating this suspenseful story told from Jackie's point of view. Sound quality is excellent. For school and public libraries.

From Booklist
Gr. 6-8. Jackie is 11, and the first chapter in this page-turner is an evocation of her responses to being on a business trip in Italy with her dad: the lovely strangeness of it, and how she joyfully responds to the differences. But when her father collapses on a remote road while they are driving, Jackie's terror grows as two men, a father and son, pick her up, leave her father, and toss her passport. They take her to a house near the sea, where a woman with sad eyes cares for her. We are inside Jackie's head through all of this: she understands no Italian, and her conflicting responses of loneliness, fear, and sudden moments of pleasure over a ripe tomato or a songbird, make a tangle. But she reads her captors well, and learns their sorrow even as she figures out her own. A taut thriller that races to its complex conclusion. GraceAnne DeCandido

Three Days
By A Customer
This book Three Days by Donna Jo Napoli is a breath taker.
It shows you how your life could change enormously in 1 second.
Three Days is a story but it seems like a true account and as you
can tell it is an adventure book. In this book you can never know
what is going to happen next.
Three Days is a very strong book. There are so many
strengths. This is one of the reasons that I recommend Three Days.
This story is about an 11 year old girl named Jackie Holt who
went to Italy with her father. One night they were driving to their
hotel when all the sudden Jackie's dad collapses. I think this is
the strongest point in the book. Jackie gets scared. Jackie's dad
pulls the car to the side of the highway. The car still going fast
bounces over the rough ground. Jackie tries to get cars to stop
in every way she can think of. Then two Italian men picked her up
but instead of going to the police they took her to their home. She
meets a nice woman whose actions comfort Jackie.
Donna Jo Napoli did an excellent job on writing this book
and I hope to read more books that she has written.
I recommend this book because it has no weaknesses and
it is a great book. This book is for readers age 9-15. When you read
Three Days it is one of those books that gives you a tingle and
keeps your interest from beginning to end.

Her father suddenly has a fatal heart attack and she finds herself stranded on the side of the road, with the realization that her father is dead and she is all alone in a foreign country, with no one to help her. At last a car with two Italian men, a father and son, stop. They take her into their car and leave her father which she doesn't understand. They throw her passport into the river and take her to a house in a remote area of the country. At the house an Italian woman takes care of Jackie. My Many Colored Days, by Dr. Seuss

Accompanying a manuscript Dr. Seuss wrote in 1973, was a letter outlining his hopes of finding "a great color artist who will not be dominated by me." The late Dr. Seuss saw his original text about feelings and moods as part of the "first book ever to be based on beautiful illustrations and sensational color." The quest for an artist finally ended—after the manuscript languished for more than two decades—at the paint brushes of husband-and-wife team Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher whose stunning, expressive paintings reveal such striking images as a bright red horse kicking its heels, a cool and quiet green fish, a sad and lonely purple dinosaur, and an angrily howling black wolf. Using a spectrum of vibrant colors and a menagerie of animals, this unique book does for the range of human moods and emotions what Oh, the Places You'll Go! does for the human life cycle. Here is a wonderful way for parents to talk with children about their feelings. With Johnson and Fancher's atmospheric, large-scale paintings bursting off the pages, Dr. Seuss's vision is brought to life. This rare and beautiful book is bound to appeal to both the innocent young and the most sophisticated seniors.

Amazon.com Review
The words and illustrations of Dr. Seuss have alway seemed inseparable--a peerless fusion of verbal and visual wit. Yet when the good doctor wrote the manuscript for My Many Colored Days in 1973, he specified that the book should be illustrated by "a great color artist who will not be dominated by me." Twenty-three years later, he has gotten his wish. Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher have produced a series of rich, painterly images that could never be mistaken for faux-Seuss. They have, however, caught something of his simplicity, and just as important, his sense of whimsy.

From Publishers Weekly
The archives of many a late author, from Margaret Wise Brown (Four Fur Feet) to Sylvia Plath (The It-Doesn't-Matter Suit), often yield unpublished manuscripts. Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, is no exception: he wrote but did not illustrate this rhyme, which assigns colors to moods. The effort is pleasant but lightweight: "You'd be/ surprised/ how many ways/ I change/ on Different/ Colored/ Days," announces a child, portrayed as a flat, gingerbread-man shape of yellow, then blue, then purple. Spread by spread, the character metamorphoses into animals of varying hues, from an energetic red horse to a secretive green fish to a droopy violet brontosaur ("On Purple Days/ I'm sad./ I groan./ I drag my tail./ I walk alone"). Husband and wife Johnson and Fancher (Cat, You Better Come Home) do not mime the author's pen-and-ink creations but work in pasty, expressionistic brushstrokes and blocky typefaces that change with the narrative tone. The characteristically catchy Seussian rhyme could help turn a Gray Day into a "busy, buzzy" (Yellow) one, and the snazzy die-cut jacket gives this volume an immediate lift above the competition. But the pointed message of Oh, the Places You'll Go! and the genius of Seuss's early work go missing. Ages 3-8.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Ages 2^-4. Thirty years ago, Dr. Seuss wrote this active rhyming verse connecting colors with moods and feelings. The new illustrations are glowing and lively; for each color, a different animal jumps with energy. Pink flamingos dance; a bright red horse kicks its heels; a green fish glides quietly. Why, though, in a book for children, are brown and black only associated with sadness and anger? Would Dr. Seuss have written this today? In the words of Langston Hughes, "The night is beautiful / So the faces of my people." Hazel Rochman

Non-traditional Seuss - on the acceptability of emotions
By A Customer
This book is very different from other Dr. Seuss books. First, the whimsical rhymes and made-up words which characterize Seuss in such classics as One Fish, Two Fish..., and The Lorax are absent here. Instead there is a simple elegance in couplets which brings colors and images together with emotions and moods. Second, the playful cartoon-style illustrations of more light-hearted classics are replaced by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher's more abstract paintings. These paintings cover the whole page with deep colors, drenched in emotion. Between the wonderful images suggested by the couplets and the engaging art (not illustration!) this book brings home a message to kids of all ages about the acceptability of their moods and emotions.
My daughters' reaction to this book has been tremendous. My older daughter (4 y.o.) wants to linger on each page to examine the art while my younger daughter (10 mos.) tries to feel the texture of the paint. I can see their faces reacting to the feelings suggested by each color and rhyme. We don't have many children's books that are 'illustrated' in a manner as poignant as this book (but we have an extensive library which most of the classics). Yet despite the 'message' it is never preachy - just a matter-of-fact statement that we all have emotions and they are all OK. Seuss provides the images as a frame of reference to help kids understand and explain them, which is especially helpful for little ones who haven't yet developed the vocabulary and reasoning to figure it out for themselves.
The best benefit is not necessarily even for kids to understand themselves, but to help kids understand grow-ups' moods - why mommy is tired after a long day at work, or why daddy is frustrated when he burns dinner, etc. I can just tell my daughters that I am in a 'grey' mood for a while, and all becomes crystal clear!

Creating a Colorful Way of Communicating Emotion and Mood!
By Donald Mitchell
Early in his career, Dr. Seuss wrote many books as Theo. LeSieg (the last name being his own name of Geisel in reverse) that were illustrated by others. In 1973, he wrote the rhymes for this book, but wanted someone else to illustrate it. After his death, his wife brought the book to his publisher's attention. Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher have created a book filled with stunning paintings and fascinating typography to bring Dr. Seuss's range of daily moods and emotions alive. Using this story, people can communicate these feelings more vividly and accurately to one another.
The book is obviously inspired by the common sentence you've heard many times, "I'm feeling blue today."
"Some days are yellow.
Some are blue.
On different days
I'm different too."
"You'd be
surprised
how many ways
I change on Different
Colored
Days."
Most colors are also associated with an animal. Red is a horse kicking up its heels. Brown is a bear, "slow and low." On a yellow day, "I am a busy, buzzy bee." On a green day, he's a "cool and quiet fish." On a happy pink day, he's a flamingo! On black days, he becomes a howling wolf. He even has mixed-up days, when he is several colors at once (disguised as a cut-out cookie of a person).
He's reassuring, as always, in the end.
"But it all turns out all right,
you see.
And I go back to being me."
The paintings in the book are remarkable for the simple, fundamental images they represent . . . both building on and adding to our mental archetypes. They also use color and shape well to create a mood over two colorful pages. Further, the texture of painting is almost palpable to the touch, adding an appreciation for depth and context for the viewer or reader.
One way you can use this book is to ask your child what color he or she is today. You can also communicate your color, as well. You can each learn more about how to change one another's not-so-attractive colors in this way, or to help sustain desirable ones. I know of no other book that is so effective at creating concepts and vocabulary for conveying emotions and moods.
I suggest that you extend this book by adding other colors and images that capture moods and emotions that are not represented here. And don't feel like you have to limit this to your child. Adults can benefit from this perspective and way of communicating as well.
Live vividly and colorfully in ways that please you!

This should be in everyone's library!
By Jodie Thompson
My in-laws got me this book shortly after I married my husband. They knew that I collect children's books and thought that I would like to have this one for my collection. They were right! I love it and it quickly grew to one of my all time favorites. The pictures are so wonderful and bright. I love the meaning behind the text that all days are different and some days are good and some days are lousy. On those lousy days, it is a great pick-me-up even for adults. Children love this book and will read it over and over again. Please get this book for anyone you know.
Note to teachers: This is a fantastic book to discuss emotions and feelings. I teach kindergarten and we do a lot of discussion about emotions and feelings and how to handle them. This book is a great way to begin that type of discussion. Also, it is great when working with color words because a different color day is on each page. I usually incorporate both into the same week.

Van Day Truex: The Man Who Defined Twentieth-Century Taste and Style, by Adam Lewis

Van Day Truex is widely regarded as the father of twentieth-century American design. Under his leadership, Parsons School of Design became the foremost school for interior design and fashion in the United States and he influenced generations of students entering these fields. But his greatest legacy—beautifully chronicled in Van Day Truex—is his long reign as design director at Tiffany & Co., which he transformed into a model for unprecedented style and grace. Interior designers, architects, fashion devotees, and furniture designers will treasure this first-ever portrait of Truex. This magnificent volume—illustrated throughout with color and black-and-white photographs—is a glorious tribute to one of America's foremost designers and a fascinating biography of the man Brooke Astor called "one of the most charming men I ever knew."

Amazon.com Review
Van Day Truex was born in Kansas, the artistically inclined son of a stern and intolerant shop manager. After the seemingly obligatory stint living with a sympathetic and worldly aunt in Wisconsin, he escaped to New York City and design school (quite against his parents' wishes), turning in a stellar performance at the institution that would become Parsons School of Design and immediately earning the notoriously hard-won approval of none other than Frank Alvah Parsons. Several hundred society introductions, garden parties, and black-and-white balls later, Truex found himself at the center of the international elite, one of the social register's most sought-after interior designers--not to mention one of the most prized dinner guests in New York and on the Riviera.

As an enormously popular instructor at Parsons, and the school's president from 1942 to 1952, Truex influenced American interior design far beyond the rarefied circles of his friends and clients--Brooke Astor, Lady Mendl, Grace Bingham, and the like. And as director of design at Tiffany & Co. from 1955 to 1962, arguably the store's heyday, Truex indeed had a hand in defining upper-class taste--he called it "design judgment"--or at least what went into the place settings on the dining tables of the very wealthy. Many of the designs Truex commissioned and developed for Tiffany's are still sold today as classics of the brand: the all-over wild strawberry china pattern, for example.

Adam Lewis's illustrated biography is not particularly vivid, and details of Truex's work and design philosophy are scant compared to the exhaustive (and exhausting) descriptions of the charming, urbane decorator's endless social engagements. One must remember, though, that Lewis is writing about the man whose preferred color came to be known as "Truex beige." Perhaps the designer himself would have approved of the stilted style of Lewis's prose, but for those not instantly enchanted by minor high-society and interior-design intrigue, the book's studied humorlessness will make for dull reading. --Liana Fredley

From Booklist
In the world of twentieth-century interior design, the names of Lady Mendl (Elsie de Wolfe), Sister Parish, and Billy Baldwin have rightfully been designated style makers and trendsetters. But how about Van Day Truex? Through diligent research, Lewis reveals the life details of this once dirt-poor refugee from the Midwest whose devotion to simplicity (i.e., a kitchen only needs a stove, sink, and refrigerator) won him multiple converts among society and celebrities, especially because he was at that time one of the few men in the business. His work at Parsons School of Design advanced him to the pinnacle of success: consultant for design at Tiffany. Through world wars and personal enmities, his multiple talents--as painter, taste arbiter, decorator, author, and friend--held fast until his death in 1979. Riches in design resurrected. Is That All There Is?
By A Customer
Lewis is to be commended for his valiant attempt at constructing a biography about one of the 20th century's most invisible design talents. Truex had a minor influence on a certain coterie of designers and products that never reached very far beyond 57th and Fifth. His circle was rich, cultured and insular, therefore preventing him from gaining a kind of commercial notoriety that some of his peers were able to. Yet we still reap the fruits of his efforts to this day, with some of most lovely flatware, china and objets Tiffany's has to offer. What is most curious about Truex as a subject, is that perhaps he should have been a chapter in another book. He just wasn't that compelling (except for his fastidious neatness and controlled eating habits). Not to minimize the amount of work it must have been for Lewis to assemble all of this vaguely interesting material. I just wanted to know a little bit more about his personal life. Just a tiny bit more gossip might have been like a dash of paprika!

Completes a significant gap in American design history
By A Customer
Lewis has obviously unearthed a treasure trove of very important material in the form of Truex' scrapbooks bringing to light an amazing tapestry of relationships bridging the worlds of fashion, product design, interior design, design education, and various cultural elites. It's refreshing to read a biography that is illustrated with the subject's own snapshots, original works, and previously published material that has been long unavailable. Parsons School of Design itself celebrated a centennial not long ago giving Truex no more than a few lines in its retelling of its story--the author has filled in a gaping hole in American design history for Parsons as well as Tiffany and Co.
Contrary to another reader review, I am relieved not to be subjected to the "spice" that is strewn over so many other biographies. Lewis gives us as much personal information as is appropriate to the subject. This will be a requisite acquisition for many libraries, circulating and otherwise, I think.

story of an influencial mid 20th Centruy man of great elan. a review of influencial personalities who came to define a certain high style of interior decoration and it's history. written without much humor but insight of the man who formulated present day Parsons School and on as design director of present day Tiffany and Company. full of illustrations and candid snapshots. should be required reading for all design students.
