Excellent book on how to look after succulents

I thought I would go and write a complete review for the series as all books act as part of a whole. All books are relatively short but packed full of glossy colour photos of an amazing array of succulents (and some cactus). Each rating is for the book listed.

Succulents for the garden - this book goes into the functionality of succulents in the garden and containers. The solving problems with succulents part of this book is very handy for explaining how succulents can be used in those hard to grow areas of the garden. The 2nd part of the book is a small overview of common species easily obtained by the casual gardener. A great book for an introduction into succulents.

More succulents for the garden - this book builds on the previous by by looking at the creative aspects of using succulents in the garden through using different types such as cascading, spiney and sculptured succulents for visual effect. A nice book for highlighting all the different shapes and sizes one can find in succulents.

Succulent success in the garden - Not a great deal of substance to this book, just many nice photos of succulents being used for creative garden design. A nice book for ideas on how to mass plant and design with succulents, but not a book for the container gardener really. A good ideas book but not much info.

Succulents propogation - excellent book which could stand by itself as a terrific reference on propogating succulents. Goes through when where and how to propogate succulents with brief overviews on the best way to propogate common types of succuelents for an easy way to boost the home collection. Even goes into some exotic methods of propogation such as drilling and surgical division!

Succulents care and health - goes into the nuts and bolts of being a succulent grower, such as general care, how to rejuvinate old plants, how to identify a bad plant for purchase, how and when to fertilise and how and when to water. Nice book for an overview on how to row these plants well.

Overall a great collection as a collection, the propogation book is by far the best stand alone book. As I have said all books have a great array of amazing pictures to highlight these wonderful plants and the authors obviously know their stuff and are passionate about their hobby. Would recommend for all levels of growers.

Clay Voices Still Speak...Cool Concept!

This is a beautiful book--in text, in illustration, in design, in concept. The warm earth tones are pleasing to the eye; they do not detract from the book's central messages: the value of historical-mindedness and respect for civilizations of the past. Though the book is intended for children, adults can glean quite a lot of educational treasure from it as well. I love the following soul-stirring statement from the book: "...every piece of clay is a piece of someone's life." A perfect reminder that, in the past, pottery was not only useful, it was highly personal and culturally meaningful. Pottery merged function with art. Without "libraries" of pottery surviving the centuries, we would have lost much human history.

Baylor's worthy book provides an intriguing introduction to basic archaeology, and it would be an appropriate supplement to any class and / or discussion about the cultures of the ancient Southwest or their art. I do feel, however, that most children under five years old might not understand / appreciate many of concepts well enough to make true connections with the story, especially if they are from a region other than the Southwest. Certain vocabulary words could be a challenge for these youngsters: desert, pottery, ancient, thousand, kneel, perky, speckled, polishing, tribe, fierce, canyons, ceremonies, etc. If I were selecting the target audience of children for this product, I would probably say 6 to 10 year olds rather than the given 4-8 year olds. But that's just my opinion! :)

Especially nice is the small map at the back, which shows where four prehistoric Native American cultures flourished: the Anasazi, the Hohokam, the Mimbres, and the Mogollon. The pottery of these cultures inspired the designs used in this book. My favorite illustrations are those of Kokopellie, the flute player, and the ones with celestial themes. Somehow, I found the bear-wrestling image rather funny! :) All in all, I am quite satisfied with this book--thought-provoking and inspiring.

People who actually craft pottery may enjoy this book because it recognizes and celebrates hand-made products.

Preserving Heritage

When Clay Sings, tells the story of Indian pottery lying in the sands of the desert of the American Southwest. This pottery cries out with stories from the lives, customs, and thoughts of the people. The legacy of their lives are wrapped up in the art. The beautiful Indian artwork on each page matches the lyrical, imagery effect of the text. A great book for introducing children to Indian heritage or pottery in general.

This is a book I would give to my grownup friends who are potters, or graphic artisits, or parents of budding artists.... I was drawn in by the title and the cover art, and enchanted by what I found...truly a treasure! It is about the centuries-old tradition of pottery and the stillness necessary to hear the small voice in the clay as it sings to the potter. A wonderful book to give as a gift during these holidays so filled with noise and technology and BUY ME! Enjoy.

About the Author

William J. Germann studied chemistry as an undergraduate at Kenyon College and went on to earn a Ph.D. in physiology at the University of Michigan. Among other biology courses, Bill currently teaches three undergraduate human physiology courses at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. Part of his work at the University consists of advising pre-medical students. Bill was recently appointed chair of the Biology Department. He is a member of the Biophysical Society, the American Association of University Professors, and the Texas Association of Advisors for Health Professions.

Cindy L. Stanfield earned both a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Physiology at the University of California at Davis. She teaches physiology to undergraduates at the University of South Alabama, where she has published numerous papers in neurophysiology. Cindy is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society, Sigma Xi, and the Golden Key Honor Society.

Easily the best

Ignore what your classmates, kaplan, PASS and the professor say - skip the terribly mediocre and incomprehensible Guyton and Berne and Levy and pick Germann up. This is EASILY the best physio book out there. The software package alone will get you through the toughest of concepts. This is one of the best-written textbooks on any subject out there and it makes learning about the human body, with its fantastic images and awesome explanations, fun and memorable.

Wanna understand human body functions?

Great book to read for better understanding of human body functions. There are good and colorful illustrations in it. Through the guided illustrations and simplified physiological explanations, it makes easier to connect the function of one part of the body to the other.
Well I made good grade on my exam in anatomy and physiology anyhow ... so I can say that this book helped me a lot.

Excellent, practical guide

How Successful People Think Differently is a quick, easy read packed with practical tips and easy-to-follow advice. There are a few things which stand out in particular:
- You are likely to finish the book. It is short and punchy - it won't lie around unread, like other self-help books often do.
- You are likely to follow the advice. It is presented in an accessible format, with very clear, practical ways in which to excel.
- You are likely to see results - the ultimate aim of the book.
This book is for anyone who wants to aim higher.

Another Akash Karia Book to be Studied

"How Successful People Think Differently" is a fast read on how to become successful by thinking as successful people think, by setting goals, by writing goals down, by sharing them and by setting realistic daily goals. He talks about overcoming temptations and replacing negative habits. Learn about "if then" thinking. Akash Karia not only writes in an easy to understand style, but he also backs up his information with links to academic studies. This is a good book for many people who are still clinging to the fence, procrastinating and not achieving their goals. I highly recommend it. This is another demonstration by Akash that you can set goals and achieve them. Just look at how many great books he is writing at an alarming pace. Akash, you are my inspiration.
